Re: TB Bypass Kit ?? What, why, when ??? (C54EVER)
You will get both sides of this one, so I'll save some others the heartache. The Throttle Body Bypass reroutes coolant around the throttle body. In the stock configuration, coolant is routed through the trottle body in order to help warm-up the incoming air charge on cold start-ups. The basic theory is cool air=HP. So, supposedly, if you remove the heat from the intake charge, you are getting free HP. There is a great debate on whether this actually bears fruit on our motors. Basically, it's not worth the $15 most places sell it for. You can do the same mod for only a couple of dollars by just getting a longer coolant hose and bypassing the throttle body yourself. Or get a barbed fitting and a couple of small hose clamps from the garage. Good luck, Chris

i can give you my results based on my 1/4 mile times. i have an 02 a4 coupe with blackwing filter , zo6 rims + tires and manaflow xpipe cat back exhaust. best 1/4 13.235 . installed tbbypass and changed oil to 0w30 amsoil . best time 13.168. the difference of .067 in times roughly equates to 6.7 hp. my guess is that at the start the intake air is not heated up as much with the tbb.but once you pick up speed the outside cooler air is being sucked trough the filter at a greater volume with no chance to warm up .at that point i don't think the tbb is doing anything for performance (outside air temp 60F ,coolant temp 195f and not flowing through the throttle body) , but anyway i always test my mods at the track to see any + or -results.i live about 1/2 mile away from Mission Speedway in British Columbia so no problem. also , before the bypass the tbody and the front part of the intake was very hot to the touch now its barely warm even after a 1/4 mile run.

Not a performance mod. Definitely do it if you plan on digging into your motor very often. Disconnecting and reconnecting the hoses is a pain!! FWIW.

You probably gained 5hp from the oil change. The only true way to test mods is one at a time and then conditions change every minute. What cracks me up is when you do all 25 five and ten proven hp tricks but to your suprise the 200hp you should have gained is more like 20. But to me thats still 20hp ,doesn't cost much and gives you a reason to get under the hood. Like 100,000 mile plugs , I changed mine so I could change them again sooner. Whats the fun in a car that doesn't need a tune up for 100,000 miles.
My 1985 Corvette gained about 12 Hp from the mod. The temp of the aluminum intake plenun before and after the mod was SIGNIFICANT!! Cold air = HP. HP = good. Get the mod!!!!!!!! It does not hurt anything unless you live in Anartica and drive you car to work in that weather. I have wet to do it to my C5"s but it is on the schedule for SPRING!
