I hope someone has experienced thi and can tell me if its the gear or do I have a bigger problem. Seems the right headlight goes up and down just fine, but once it goes down the motor continues to run for about 30 seconds, sounding like its grinding glass then just stops. Any help greatly appreciated!
This is a prime indication that you have a stripped nylon gear! Get a NEW brass gear and rebuild the head light motor. Then you will NEVER have to worry about it again! :D
Thanks for your help, I ordered a bronze gear last night. The exact same thing happened 20 years ago with my 85, you would think after this much time GM would have figured out how to prevent this.

I'm sure they knew how to prevent it in '85, but they've saved $0.18 on every Vette since then by sticking with nylon.
:banghead: I wish I would have seen this yesterday! I had the same problem and a fellow forum member informed me that only half the gear is used. You can follow these directions (look about 2/3rds down the page) to fix it. Worked great...
I wish you would have seen it also. That article was great. I did the repair and it took about twenty minutes. I will keep the bronze gear as stock, because I know its going to eventually wear out again. There ought to be a way we could put this fix in the "tech tips" section.
