Driving home yesterday about 12 miles in my 98 Vert and I noticed that the oil pressure gage was pegged at 80 and the digital readout was 123-126 PSI and the oil temp was up to 216 degrees.
What could be the source of the problem???...sending unit, bearing, pump???
Wow,my 99 runs about 40-42 under normal driving,by the gauge.I would think the sending unit went out. That seems very high to me.I would definitely have it checked out to be safe and have peace of mind.Did this just happen?Might be a good idea not to drive it too much until its checked out.Might not be anything major, but you never know. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
you have a bad oil sending unit for sure... this is a common problem...
go to the top of this page , click on tools, then tech tips, then C5, then look for the topic replacing the oil sending unit. you will see pictures , proceedure, etc. it is aboput 150/200 dollar fix at the dealer.... the part is 34 dollars... I fixed two of these for people.,, it took me an hour the first time... and 45 minutes the second time..
It looks as though of all you are in agreement about the sending unit. Thanks for the help. I will let the dealer take care of it. Being a female, I am not to mechanically inclined.
I would say sending unit as well, but it does bother me that your oil temp was so high after only 12 miles. I recommend no driving until you know for sure. Better safe than sorry.

Not to worry, it's a fairly common problem. Mine did the same thing last year. The culprit is the oil pressure sending unit. :yesnod:
As far as the 216 degree oil temp reading goes, after looking at her sig for a location and seeing Port Orange, Fla., I wouldn't be too concerned about that either. Depending on ambient temps and the speeds being driven I've had my oil temps up into that range a number of times in the past. HTH
I saw she was from Florida as well, but 216 degree's after only 12 miles of driving seems high. Unless I am running WOT (which I assume she wasn't on a cold motor) I run well under 200 until the car is fully warm, and average about 200-205. I find how hard I drive the car to have more effect on oil temp than ambient temp. I suspect it is the common oil sending unit problem as others have suggested, like I said if it was my car I would take it straight to the dealer Monday and let it sit until then, but I usually err on the conservative side.
mine got freaky a couple times last year wherethe oil pressure hit 65 a couple times. It's usually in the mid-upper 40's. My sending unit is on the way out and I have 12500 on a 2000 vert! :U

Les,
No problem. I agree with the check-up. It doesn't hurt to play it safe.
I agree on the sending unit, mine did this just last week. $35 shipped for gmparts direct, the damn cadillac dealer charged me $50 and thats the lowest he would go. Anyway, keep in mind that the part number has changed from what is listed in the tech tips (yes its on the 3rd revised part # now).

Robert ;)
Did a little test over the weekend. Wanted to check oil temp after 12 miles of mostly freeway driving (from a "cold" start). Oil temp was 208 degrees, ambient temp approx. 59 degrees. :)
My Oil Sending unit has gone out. What is the latest part number for this unit ? I have AC Delco 12573107. I would appreciate any help on the latest unit. This one has a aluminium case.
