I picked up a late model Z06 factory center section (H-Pipe etc) for my 01 coupe. I had already put on the Ti's. Did the center swap cause I had heard and read via Dave Hill about the pup converters being restrictive to the exhaust. After I got the old center section off, I took a look down the pup converters to see what I could see and HOLY COW!! I can't believe these cars could breath at ALL! (pic below). It's like all the exhaust gas has to pass through this cloth mesh thing before it goes to the main converters. Glad they eliminated the pups on the Z06 centers. This thing sounds awesome and perfect for my taste. The best way for me to describe the mesh thing by touch is imagine if you took a pair of tube socks and rolled them into a ball, then stuffed it into the pup converters and hardened it up. It's one of those things that you see and you KNOW that thing has to be holding up the gasses on the way out. Great cheap move.
Here is the pic, the white area is the mesh thing that I am talking about and best I can tell is it completely covers the opening into the pup converter.
No according to the article, they came up with a different design with the Z06 exhaust which eliminated the need for the pups while still getting the proper job done using the mains.

The pups were only used as an adjunct when the engine was below
a certain temp. When warmed up, all they do is restrict exhaust flow.
so what is the actual result of removing the precat matierial any gains anywhere other than sound
i ve seen cats gutted before and well the sound that resulted was not so desirable most gave a loud hollow grunt from having the cats gutted
just curious to see if its worth it to do it in terms of both sound and performance
ive already got borla stingers and pretty much happy with the sound just wondering the benefit of it or if gutting them with the borlas would have any negative affects on db levels
thanks
GMosley, I guess it would depend on your taste. I went with the TI's and the Z06 mid pipe cause I only want the car to sound "loud" when i am getting on it. This combination seems to be the trick. Since I didn't do the hollowing out, I just don't know about that trick having negative effects but if anyone else out there is like be and can't stand the dreaded drone, this by all means was the way to go.
it's a free mod... whatever worth that has to you.
just like the post originator said... the pre-cats have to be restrictive.
Many seek the Z06 sound. Gutting the pre-cats and adding TI titanium exhaust is as close as you can get without also swapping in the Z06 heads and cam.
After seeing inside those things, it would be realllll hard to convince me that getting rid of those pups won't provide and additional power. No way this car could breath to its potential with those pups fully intact.
