I have been reading about the Column Lock problems that other members on this site have had. I have not had my column lock yet and am trying to avoid it. I have been looking at the different suppliers for the bypass. Could someone tell me where I could get one at a reasonable price.
Thanks for the input. :flag
I believe Thunder Racing has the best prices ($49.99?). Look to the left at the list of vendors and click on their name. I believe this is the same product that jmX use to sell at half the price of others.
A few years ago I bought and installed one from c5solutions. It worked like a champ. A year and a half later GM sends out a recall notice and I opted not to have them pull my dash apart to install something that I already had - why tempt fate?
I use to read about all of the other C5 owners having one column lock failure after another! My 98 NEVER gave me ANY hint that the thing would ever fail! I thought that I was invinceable! :steering:
This past summer while I was at Carsile I got bit!!! I had just finished washing my car and I was ready to leave and the thing GOT ME!!! It was 90 degrees out and 90% humidity and I was stuck right in the middle of the car wash area. I had tools and took the dash apart and wiggled the harness, beat the wheel a few times and it unlocked!
I got a bypass and installed it and I now have one less thing to worry about!!
The official recall ended a while back, so its probably not "officially" free anymore, but if you have an A4 transmission maybe they'll put the bypass kit in for ya.
If you have a 6 speed, all gm is gonna do is put another column lock motor in and its just going to fail like the others. So there's no official fix from GM for 6 speed cars.
And yeah...it does kinda suck not having the steering wheel lock as a security feature, but if you've ever seen repo-man on the learning channel, you'll know that they can steal the car quite easily..locked wheel or not. :nonod:
Yep, read all about it too. Figured it would be fixed by 2004 but for insurance, I got one from ThunderRacing. Easy install and now I have peace of mind.
