Okay, I've read a lot of posts on gears and I'm convinced I want 4.10s on my 2001 MN6 that currently has the stock 3.42s..
What are the pros and cons of 4.10s on my wife's 2000 A4 that currently has 3.15s? It won't likely be going to the track, certainly not on a regular basis. I want best performance for seat of the pants around town fun. It will also be our trip car so I don't want to totally destroy gas mileage although I can live with a reasonable drop.
Comments and suggestions from those of you with 4.10s and 3.90s on your A4s??? What did it do to your hiway mileage? I have seen RPM/gear charts for the MN6, does anyone have one for the A4?
i would also like some info ive heard get 3.90 and then heard 4.10 and ive gotten prices of 1250 and then 1895 so not sure why the big price dif. what r u guys paying
If you guys have any questions, feel free to give us a call. We are building the rears for $795 complete. We even have a few cores that we can send out if needed. :seeya :seeya :seeya
WHY DO THESE CARS DO THIS TO US!!!!! Last week I wanted headers...this week I want 4.10's...I am so confused! I just want the best kick in the pants too! I am not going to be a racer for money(now I may go for fun once in awhile) SO what is everyones opinions?

I went for the gears....4:10 My car is pretty much stock, 6 SPD,Corsa Exhaust, BlackWing Air Filter, Non-Run Flat Tires. You can't believe the difference this one Mod will do for you driving enjoyment. I've said it before....It makes your car into the Sports Car it was intended to be. :steering:
Simple solution, put the 4.10's in your MN6.
Then replace the 3.15's with the 3.42 that came out of the MN6.
IMHO you will have the best of both worlds because the A4 will really like the 3.42's. and it will not harm the driveabilty or fuel mileage noticably.
Plus you only have to pop for one gearset!!!! :smash:
I know other people will try to get you to go up to 3.73's but for the difference in green and the additional drop in mileage and extra wear and tear on the engine it's really not worth it. :yesnod:
Besides if you run the gear calc's you will find the 3.42 is the perfect axle ratio for the A4 with stock dia. tires. :)

Thanks Bob. I did think of that one but I wasn't sure I would be happy if I didn't go all the way. I also read on a past forum that the switch from 3.15s to 3.42s wasn't SOP noticable. I also thought about putting the 4.10s first in the A4 and then if I decided that was a mistake I could stick them in the MN6.
I'm hoping to hear from folks that have A4s with either 3.90s or 4.10s and get their experience. Most everyone seems to reply that has the MN6. I'm clear there, the 4.10s are what I want for the MN6. I'm fuzzy on the A4. I think I want 4.10s but I don't know if its overkill.
I'd go 3.90s in the M6. I've had 3.73s and 3.90s in my C5 M6. Can't see how anyone would want 4.10s unless they were a drag racer. The 3.90s are almost too tall for my taste, but still OK, and quick. With 4.10s, say goodbye to using 4th gear on the highway. JMO.
I love my 4.10's. I don't do any racing and my car is basically stock right now. 6th gear was useless until now. I think it's the only way to go in the MN6.
It's definitely much quicker from a dead start. :yesnod:
I have 4.10 on my A4. I had it installed 3 months ago. Driving with 4.10 is a new experience. It has unbelievable acceleration. I can pass by any cars on the street and highway like lightening quick. And it makes feel like that you are always to ready to accelerate, because you are constantly running at a higher RPM than 3.15. I love this mod. Now since I had it for three months, it is natural to drive the car. I think that it is very streetable. The only fall back is that your gas mileage will go down by a lot. My street mpg is 14 & highway is 19. And if you drive too long on the highway, this car will make you tired, because it is constantly running at a higher RPM. This is my weekend car. SO it is perfact for me, even though I do not go to drag. If you want to have fun, this is a way to go. Without too much highway driving and not worrying about gas money, this is a perfact mod. Also, it is very fun on highway, if you do not drive more than 2 hours.
do you still have run-flat tires; and can you mash the pedal all the way down without thinking about it.... or do you need ti use some caution when kicking into WOT ?
Re: Gears, one more time please.... (Mike Mercury)
:lurk: I'm curious to see what people feel about this. The 4.10s do sound a bit much, and I don't like the idea of having 14mpg and high rpms constantly. How different is it from the 3.9s and then down to the 3.73s. Can you notice these gearing differences from stock? Or is it less noticeable on the autos :steering:
Lost you on the "tiring" part. Why would the 4.10 be any more tiring? Can you explain what you mean? I was thinking you just set the cruise either way? Also, whaT mileage did you get hiway before the hears that it dropped to 19 from? Thanks.

I would not go with 4:10's in an automatic. That is way to deep of a gear. They are good for MN6 6 speeds but not in the auto's. I would look into either a 3:42 or a 3:73 for your car. Maybe someone can chime in that has these gears installed. Kaley
What I meant for tiring is that if you want to pass by too many cars on highway your right foot gets tired after all the high rpm. I guess you can put it onto cruising control lile you said. However, you will lose all the fun. I had 2.73 before and I was getting 26 mpg on highway. I guess that it is your choice between fun & gas expense. If your vette is a weekend car, I would definately recommand the mod. However, if this is your daily driving, you really have to think about it.
Talk to Chris at EastCoast Supercharging. I have stock 2.73 in my A4 he suggested 3.42 or 3.73. 4.10's will not hook up well with street tires when you get on it and for a daily driver the loss in mpg isn't worth it :seeya
Talked to Cartek a supporting tuner and they say for sure with auto to go with 3.73 gears, they priced at $895 installed so you might give them a call.

:iagree:
the 6 speeds have 2 overdrive gears. So for highway cruising there is a way to lower the RPM's to a comfortable level. The A4 has only one overdrive; 4.10's are mostly a mainly-track ratio.
