Default Water pump replacement?

Lately I've been noticing that Casper has been leaving the occasional dropping on the ground, and it's definitely coolant. Temps still running in the normal range (so far) but I want to nip this thing in the bud before warm weather sets in. Since I have replaced all hoses (and flushing the cooling system) last summer, I'm thinking that the water pump may be a 'goner. Since I have 85K+ this doesn't seem too far fetched. After looking things over, it doesn't seem like it would be too much of a problem to change the pump myself. Has anyone done this lately? Any problems and/or tips to share? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks,
Robert :)

Just had mine replaced on my '98 Cpe at the dealership. I had the same problem - couple of drips here and there and an occasional whiff of coolant. One thing that I was disappointed in was I had read in several posts that GM Dexcool can gel after time ( air exposure) and ruin the water pump. So, I had mine changed every 20K miles. Damn pump still went out at 70K w/o Dexcool gelling. Cost was about $300

You can do it yourself. It is fairly easy. The hardest part is removing the old gasket residue. That is a major PIA. :banghead:

Mine died right at 100K miles right after I replaced the coolant.

Thanks guys. Think I'll order a pump from Fichtner Chev. I've had very good service from them in the past. As far as the "gelling" part goes, I think that Dexcool has gotten a bit of a bad rap. I noticed no problem in this regard last summer when I was flushing the system. One little extra thing I do to keep the water as clean as possile (read: free from mineral contaminates) is to use nothing but distilled water mixed with the Dexcool. It's cheap insurance for truly clean water. Thanks again. :)
