I am looking at a 2001 Z06. CARFAX came back clean. (Thanks Sorny!)
Anyways, I know the 2001's have oil consumption problems, and this car has no factory warrenty left. Will I stil be able to go to a Chevy dealer and get them to change the bad oil ring free of cost?
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (BroncoGrad)
I would first investigate and see if the re-ring hasn't already been done.
If you have the VIN #, any GM dealer should be able to tell you the warranty repair history on the car.
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (BroncoGrad)
Well, you also gotta remember that not all 01s had the problem. We had an 01 T/A and it did not use a lot of oil, maybe half a quart per 3K miles and it also did not have the piston slap. Just a td when really cold, but it went away in the first few minutes of driving and wasn't any louder than the slight cold slap in my LT1.
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (BroncoGrad)
The dealer did my rings after my warranty was up. However I had them investigating my oil consumption issue prior to it's expiration and the car only has 8K miles on it.
I think that without any prior history of work / investigation into the oil consumption issue that you will have a hard time getting them to cover it under warranty.
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (schpodie)
Thanks for the feedback.
I'm hoping the vette I am looking to purchase does not have this problem. But I will not be able to tell unless I actually purchase the vehicle, so I am taking a risk I guess.:(
I have yet to call chevy to see if any warrenty work has been done, but I will do that for sure.
Any body have any idea how much I will pay out of pocket to fix this IF I run into this problem later down the road? :cry
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (BroncoGrad)
I'm going through getting the factory to buy mine back( oil consumption, wind seal noise, easy entry, ect.) I had it done, and I'm still finding small oil spots on the rear. Now it's getting another oil consumption test. Lemon attorneys says they hone out the bad cylinders and put new oversize piston/pistons in and "Expander" rings, without replacing other rings!. The attorneys says it de-values the car. Watch out!
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (msuc5vette)
I had a re-ring under warranty at 25.000 miles and almost 2 years old so the mileage really doesn't mean anything.
Look for the black specks on the rear facia and a black "scum" that forms on the shiny tips of the exhaust pipes after only 30 miles of driving. All oil burners have these symtoms to the best of my knowledge. So you can tell after a short test drive.
If we are to believe GM, the same car will or will not burn oil when driven by different drivers so its reported history is almost irrelavent.
I own a 2001 coupe, but I would never buy another 2001 unless it was already re-ringed or if it was discounted several thousand dollars to offset the risk.

Your attourney is WRONG! The GM instructions specifically say NOT to hone the bore. They replce two piston rings per cylinder and don't touch the others (the oil control ring and the scraper ring). The cars burn oil because the oil control ring is only 9lbs (re-ringged cars and 2002+ have 12lb rings). I had my re-ring done 1000 miles ago and all is well. Shoot the car laid down 371 rwhp yesterday!
Since the car is out of warranty I'd keep looking and fine the 2002 of your liking. The extra few grand will be worth not having to deal with the re-ring. I went with the '01 b/c I'm modding the whole thing anyway.
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (Cobra4B)
I would consider a 2002, but I am already pushing the budget for a 2001. The one I am looking at is listed at $32,500. I was wanting to purchase it for UNDER $30K. A 2002 would push the budget up another $3-$5 grand... Just too much for me.
I am hoping that this car is not the 5% of 2001's with the oil consumption problem...
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (Cobra4B)
I have the same problem and am dealing with it now. I am trying to get the 02 coated pistons they put in to fix the slap and the new 02 rings. Along with the new valley cover to keep the oil out of the intake manifold. But it is a real hassle and since I am probably going to put all new aftermarket heads, pistons, cam and so on Im gonna forget about it. I have an 01 ZO6 But you can get it fixed out of warranty! There is a TSB for it and you can just contact chevrolet CAC and they will help you out.

What exactly does CAC stand for?
If in fact this is true, then I won't have to worry about paying for the new oil rings?! Someone posted above that GM won't cover this out of warrenty... what gives? :skep:
Re: 2001 Oil Consumption Problem Question... (BroncoGrad)
Heyy there BroncoGrad! I have worried over this question also, a friend is selling his 01 Coupe and I REALLY want it, but I know of several problems with the car, that coupled with the possibility of burning oil is just too much. If you can, be patient and I think a nice 02 will present itself. There was a gorgeous 02 electron blue with 15k miles for 33K, only 3k more than the 01 I'm interested in. With the C6s coming out, C5s prices will be better than ever!
