I need some opinions from those of you who have had some experience with differential changes. I have a 2004 A4 Coupe with 3.15 gears in it. I plan to change to a 3.73 gear set soon. At that time I will also add a TransGo shift Kit.
My question is, do I need to spend the extra money for sever duty output shafts?
At the moment I am stock but, over time, I plan to add a cam and ported LS1 heads. I also want to get a set of ET Streets and run brackets at the track; however I do not expect to do this a great deal.
Is there a HP level at which I should expect to use these shafts?
Re: Do I Need Severe duty shafts w/Diff change? (henchmen3)
it's a little off topic but yes I painted them. PPG makes a paint (DAR) that is an epoxy. It requires the use of a reducer and a hardener. I did it with an airbrush. It has worked out great and I had it mixed to match my LeMans Blue paint.
Re: Do I Need Severe duty shafts w/Diff change? (LeMansBlue04)
When had my diff changed I asked the same questions. The answer I got was, if I have the diff out it doesn't cost any more labor-wise to change them, so I went with it. I asked about changing them both. The answer was no. Reason? The shafts are so strong and the new gears were hardened also, so that if something happened to the rear that the drivers side shaft would snap and the whole rear end would still hold together instead of the case cracking and spitting gears, metal, and transmission parts all over the track If you are going to get ET streets and dump your TC hard You should get a hardened passenger-side output shaft when you put your gears in.
