I think i have the dreaded rear diff leak on my 99A4. Haven't looked at it since it's sitting for the winter. What area should I look at and can I fix this myself?

Most likely the rear diff, very very common problem. Also not an easy fix, You have to take out the rear diff, take it apart and replace the gasket. Mine has leaked since about 14K miles and I was just too lazy to take it in for warranty work. Now I'm just waiting for new gears because they do all the same stuff I just listed.
Fluid is red, dots on the floor near the rear of the car. I have a 273 in the rear now. so it might be a good time to move up to a 315. I guess I'll start looking for a core.
Those dots are transmission fluid rear seal probably not Rear End as the fluid is very different. I have same problem and would like to move from 3.15 to 3.73 rear end. When you change the rear it would be easy to replace rear trans seal.
