My friend is going to buy a used C5 and I tagged along to see the car. It was not bad for a 2000. When it started up, I could hear a tick tick. Is that a sound of a bent push rod. I have an 04 and the engine is pretty stable. How can you tell if you have a bent push rod and what causes it? I told him to hold off until I find out.
a bent pushrod sounds awful, you would know for sure something is wrong, you would hear more then just a tick. Bent pushrods are usually caused by missing a gear, and over reving the engine. If it is an auto, chances are it is not a bent pushrod. These guys are probably right, it is just piston slap. :smash:
If the sound does not go away when warm, and the ticking increases with rpm increase, it could be a bent pushrod. When I bent mine it was caused by a valve float at high rpm. And it was just a mild ticking/tapping. If the guy selling the vette is on the up and up, find which side of the motor the loudest ticking is coming from, and either take it to a neutral mechanic or pull the valve cover and rockers yourselves (very easily or inexpensively done) and check the pushrods. Also check the holes the pushrods go through the heads for being mishapen. If you find one bent pushrod best to replace them all.
i would think that you would definatley know if its a bent push rod my 00 use to have clatter when you first cranked it up imo i think the LS1 motors have a clattery stock valve train i have a friend who has a 99 & his does the same thing .When i changed heads i put crane hardend push rods & it quietend down some
