Question on Dual Zone HVAC display
My display is not very bright - dimmer than the radio - I can even tap on the facia and the display will change (brightness) slightly. I was thinking maybe a loose electrical connection. Anyone with experience changing this thing out or have had this problem? I assume I won't see the ground as it will go into a wire loom and back down to who knows where. How about taking off the plastic cover that hides all this stuff? Easy to figure out? Thanks guys. I wonder where to get another display unit? Ebay? Fitchner?

This is a common part failure...I changed it out on a 97 coupe...the a/c module fails....the parts can be gotton from verious vendors...karshop, vet to vet, ebay etc...look at the vendors on the left side under used/salvage. it is not hard to replace but the shifter/dash surround needs to be removed. takes about 2 hours to remove/replace...a/c takes 5 minutes once you get everything removed. hope this helps. tom :)

Anyone else provide any more insight here? I was also reading about the auto dimmer(s) in the cockpit. Any chance these may be dimming the HVAC display for no reason? I'd really appreciate some teardown insight if you have any. Thanks.

These units are known to go out on the lighting. There is no repair as it is a sealed unit. The 98-99 MY units are known to have this problem. I even had to replace the unit in my 99 Buick Regal. Same problem. Check GMpartsdirect.com for price. Was cheapest place for me. Or go for a used part. Has to do with electrical current on a glass surface. I am not sure how it works. Less current causes glass to darken and prevent you seeing the digits?
