Re: Replacing stock shifter **** on M6 (cyclerage23)
Perserverence! Gently, pry the shift plate off the top. Then grasp the wedge with a small vise grips and rock it back and forth until it loosens. This is sometimes very difficult to get loose. Once the wedge is out it should easily unscrew and come off.
Re: Replacing stock shifter **** on M6 (Bill Vett)
Last time I did this, I used the two-screwdriver approach to get the wedge out, and it worked like a charm. Cover the edge of the **** with cloth, then go with a large-blade screwdriver from each side (at the same time) and pry up on the wedge. Of course, some of them are in tighter than others, so maybe I just got lucky.

Last time I did this, I pulled the little aluminum wedge apart. The top actually broke off. Ended up destroying the **** to grind out the rest of the wedge -- didn't want the **** anyway. Way too much work to simply change the ****.
I have no better method than those already presented -- just be careful.
There simply has to be a better way to secure the **** in the first place. Let's see how they do it on the C-6.
Re: Replacing stock shifter **** on M6 (cyclerage23)
I have ONE TIP.. When you put the vise grips on the locking key(wedge) don't hit yourself in the face with the base of the vice-grip. I did this last weekend. I was pulling on the dam thing as hard as I could and then bang-- it came out and hit myself in the face..
THE DUMBEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE.. Picture a giant cut on my face next to my nose, bloody nose and spitting blood for a good 30 mintues.. My friends came by my house a little bit after I did it and they were on the ground laughing...

I wonder how many folks have taken out their windshields, rear-view mirrors, etc. in much the same way
I hate that damn little wedge thingy. It took me and my dad both yanking, prying, pulling, and tugging on it for 30 minutes before it finally came out. And when we thought we had it, we realized we had broken one of the ears off of it. :mad In the end, a drill and dremel was the demise of the POS thingy.
Mine was definitely in there very tight. First, it was hard to get a good grip with the vise grips. When I finally got (what I thought) a good grip the grips slipped off and wacked me in the mouth! I could have used a couple of stitches but I was determined not to let this thing beat me. I finally got it off and put the new one on. It was worth all the pain and I'm all healed up.

Is there a way to set the positive stop as far as screwing an aftermarket **** on? When mine is tight it turns a little too far.
yes,use a jam nut. most shifters come with one. if not find out what size the thread is and put the nut on, then the ****, and use the nut to adjust the stop of the ****.

To help get the wedge out of mine, I used the vice grips and then tapped up on the side of the grips - wedge popped right out.
