It's been about 2 weeks since I have taken my '99 out of the garage. Worked on some mods today and then later tried to take her out for a spin and the battery was too low to crank the engine.
Battery is only about 2 years old..Any suggestions as to a better quality battery and perhaps the reason a perfectly good appearing battery would go down in a protected garage?
This appears to be a common issue and is not specific to the original; the replacement batery in my 98 (a Deka) died within a year. Optima batteries are a solid choice, though I did not go that expensive this time. The security system combined with radio, etc. appear to be bigger drains than in any car I've owned before.
Get a battery minder / tender, and if you know you're not going to be using the car for three or more days, plug it in. The various computers in the car draw significant 'dark current' and will drain the battery. Before you buy a new battery, charge the current one at four amps for a few days.
If your battery is just low, recharge it! If you had a door/s, trunk or hood open for a while, that could have drained it for sure! Before I would trash a good battery, try a simple recharge! High current charge for about 2 hours and a 2 amp charge for 4-6 hours and it should be fully charged! If it still gives you trouble, then it's time for a new one!
My car sits for weeks at a time in the winter... I've never had a prpblem starting it... Ive yet to put it in a charger... its a three year old Optima red top..
Thanks to all who offered experience/advice....Bought a new Optima "red top" today...109.99 at Advance Auto parts. Also bought one of their new battery chargers and a pair of screw in side posts to charge the Delco.
Took a full charge in about 4 hours...gonna watch it for a few days then see if it holds...might keep it for a spare.
