Default help on adding freon to the cooling system

has anyone here ever added freon (do it yourself) to the cooling system in the c5 ? the sticker under the hood says it has to be synthetic, is that any different than the regular 134a ? mine is low and would like to do it myself any bad experiences? thanks in advance

Actually Freon is a brand name of a refrigerant used in home cooling units, not even made any more I believe. Kleenex is a Tissue but not all Tissue is Kelneex ;) :D

R134A is the ONLY thing you can use, gauges, etc are specifically designed for it

You should have it leak tested... some thing has come loose, a seal is gone.. or leaking.. putting more in wont solve the problem.. the charge doesnt not evaporate..

:iagree: Actually though R-12 is the "freon" that is no longer made, however the remaining stock of it is a major black market item!! Especially in Mexico. It is also what was used in auto a/c's. You cannot buy any type of refrigerant, R-22 or others without a certification number so you must take it to a shop to have this done.

R134a is not a Class I ODS (Ozone Depleting Substance). Only Class I ODS' require a license for purchase. Also a Universal License should not be good for purchase of a Class I ODS used in motor vehicles. I know it sounds crazy but the "Universal License" really isn't!

Yah, I thought by him saying "or others" that he was refering to R134a also.

I own a repair shop. You should probably take it in and get it pressure tested, as you probably have a leak somewhere.

There was a local story circulating around here last year about "black market" R134. It seems a local NAPA bought a pallett of R134 which originated out of Mexico, it turned out a couple shops were having AC performance problems in the cars they were working on. The R134 was tested and contained 40% Propane. Scary.

Most auto stores sell a kit that includes a gage and fill hose. I added some last year using the directions in the kit.

I am also a mechanic, if you start adding to much the pressure sensor will see that and the cluth will keep tripping on and off.
