I just got a Z06 muffler set but one of the pipes has benn cut about two inches from one of the mufflers. Any ideas on what to do will be appriciatted. Oh by the way I got these for $200, that is why i need to get these welded!!!
It takes a special kind of weld to weld Titanium...and alot of heat. Check some your local metal shops in your area, most muffler places will not have the tools to make Ti welds so don't look there first.
If you can't get it fixed email me and I'll give you my phone number. I just happen to live in the town where the original ZO6 exhausts are made. I also sell them the equipment to weld the titanium with. You might have to send the pipe to me but I can probably fix it or get it fixed. Ed
I have a MIG welder and it states you can weld ti with argon as the gas shield and a ti rod. I think the trick is the technique. The ti mufflers and pipes are VERY thin and you could turn them into vapor at the joint almost instantly if not experienced and very careful. They are best welded on a CNC TIG fixture but I believe you can weld it with MIG. :smash:
Welding-titanium and titanium alloys must be performed with special precautions because these materials are very reactive to contamination from atmosphere gases. But Welding-titanium is possible if these alloys are shielded from air in a very effective way either in vacuum or in an enclosure containing an inert gas.
one of these processes is TIG
Tungsten inert gas
an electric torch with an tungsten electrode and a gas purge
system-usually argon. no big deal been around at least 40 years
the problem will be finding someone that has titanium rod.
in this process you need a piece ot titanium to fill the welded area.
you melt the rod into the part you are joining. the argon flows over
the area as you weld it keeping the contaminants out
Just a thought.. but napa sells 3" wide band clamps that work pretty good just get a coupler to go over the pipes or expand one end slightly enough to fit over the other pipe and seal it with the band clamp?
pamto you can go down to your local welding supply shop & buy all the titanium wire u want & its best if you have your muffler heliarced or tig welded i been in this buisiness for 15 years ,i weld pipe for a living but i weld in oil refinerys chemical plants & paper mills Look in your phone book in the yellow pages & find a local welding company its really not a big deal just make sure the welder you get to weld your muffler is not your everyday midas muffler man a mig gun can blow a hole in that exhaust real quick its really best to weld this with a wet system a welding machine thats water cooled that allows you to turn your heat up or down with your hand or with your foot & this is done while welding a really nice machine that welds all the exotic metals
I ended up just buying other used z06 exhaust. The cut was not just a straight cut. Who ever had these before thought they could just weld them using regular materials and melted big chunks of the titanuim off the cut. It just was not worth it to weld the right side. If anyone needs just a left or both I may be able to sell them to you. They are not mine(I was going to buy them if the weld could be done). Please just email me and I can get you in touch with the owner.
