I've been looking at the same thing, and I'm leaning towards the Vortech both because there seems to be fewer problems, and because it's quieter than the ATI (I hate supercharger whine!! :D).
The C5 Forced Induction section has a lot of good info on this, too.
vortech type superchargers only put out about 1 lb of boost at 2500 rpm. they really fly at wide open, or on the race track. but how often is a is a street driven car at WFO. get the magnacharger! more fun from stop light to stop light. why do you think GM uses them. or that type of compressor.

If they did one that didn't need a hood bulge, I'd do it! I like the sleek lines of my Vette too much to make it all "lumpy"! Add to that the fact that the extra cost of the new hood adds ~$1000 to the price, and the Magnacharger has left the building!
On the Procharger\Vortec front - which is the most expandable? Also - I hear they have different requirements regarding their oil supplies - what's the deal with that?
one has the oil in it. the other one taps into the pan. MCM has a killer hood for superchargers. also LPE sell one for 750 bucks, thats painted if they do the install. the bump in the hood is a bummer. i use to have a 671 on a 1970 vette it was fast. had to look out the window to see where i was going. plus driving around killing birds. i had a paxton for long time, didn't even know it was there till about 4500 on. didn't really make a difference what cam i used. turbos are whats really fast, but they have a few problems also.

I have been going back and forth on this SAME issue - I have researched and read like mad. The Magna Charger is the best for a street toy from what I read - However, The ProCharger kit, specifically from A and A Corvette - Andy from A and A has dedicated many, many hours to making a system that really is great out of the box. Take a look - https://www.aandacorvette.com/cart/show_items.asp?MainCatID=18
Also, Andy is SOOOO willing to answer questions, and say it like it is - you really can not go wrong
"long term reliability, massive performance" your kidding....right?  :smash: :smash:   Go with the Mag....won't give you massive performance, but will be more reliable.
I'm having a vortech installed in mine. I didn't want a bulging hood, so I didn't consider the Mag. The Vortech is supposed to be quieter than the ATI. I like that the Vortech uses the same oil as the main engine oil; every time I change the oil, the supercharger oil gets changed with it.
I definitely recommend getting it professionally installed and tuned by somebody who does a lot of these. I'm hoping that will help on the low maintenance and long term reliability front. DTE is installing mine, and they do a few special things with their vortech installs.
I have had the Vortech kit on my car for over a year with NO issues what so ever. It is a daily driver as well. I couldn't be happier with the set up. Everything down to the last nut and bolt looks like a factory set up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Guys! Thanks for all the replies, and my decision is:
Vortec.
Reasons being - Hood bulge is a no-no. I just don't like it. I'm in the UK, so I can't take advantage of the offer to have the hood painted on install of the magnacharger either, so that's out.
I've heard the ATI charger going, and I can't say I like that either. I also don't like the fact that it has a seperate oil supply which needs special oil that I would have difficulty getting hold of in the UK. Vortec chargers use the same oil as the engine, so we're good.
Final question, though - my vette is fast as it is. An increase of 150bhp and circa 120 lb\ft torque is massive! How can anyone say a 500bhp vette isn't ridicuously quick??

500BHP is ridiculously fast for the average guy on the street, but people here are used to reading about 600, 700 & 800 BHP cars every day. 500BHP is about as much as most people would ever need and much above that 500 HP would be of little use with out special tires due to lack of traction.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected, Ben!
Vortec charger it is! Should be about 4 weeks from today - I can't wait!! :D
What should be the next mods I do after the charger? I wanna strengthen up the internals so I can perhaps run a shot of Nitrous too - I do go to the strip occaisionally, y'see... :D
