I think I remember someone posting that if you had any welding done on the car you should disconnect the negative battery terminal. I don't think the wide band clamps at the back of my x-pipe (LG system) is going to hold well enough to keep the exhaust tips aligned, so I'm thinking of removing those clamps and having the cats welded to the intermediate pipe. Was I correct in remembering that I should disconnect the battery?
:iagree: :iagree: ! It doent, take much to blow a BCM, PCM, TAC module and the voltage regulators in GM alternators do not like welders! It all depends on how good the welder places the ground lead on the car and where he places it. Those are factors that you do NOT have much control over.
Remove the NEG lead to be on the VERY safe side!!
If I pull the negative battery cable is the car safe then even if the welder doesn't put the ground lead? Is there an ideal place to put the ground lead so I know it's not going to hurt anything? I'm wondering if I can take those two pieces off the car and have them welded that way, but I think I need it to be on the car so I can make sure the Stinger tips are lined up right.
Put the ground clamp as close to the area being welded as possible, and disconnect the battery on ANY vehicle before welding on it.
And lastly, keep in mind the C5 floor material is not metal and it will burn. Towards the back of the floor area (near the flanges) resides the gas tanks. If you are doing anything more than a quick tack weld to keep something in alignment, remove the exhaust from the car and weld it on the bench.
The ground lead MUST be clamped to the vehicle or the welder will not work! It is best to get the clamp as close to the work as possible. Example:
If you were welding the tips on the rear of the car and the welder clamped the ground lead to the front of the frame that would NOT be a good welding practice!
The ground lead should be clamped to the pipe that is being welded and near the weld site!
