On the way home from the track, a strang clanging sound like marbles in the muffler when between 1500-2000 in OD A4 and throttle is pressed in about 1/4. All other gears are fine and the sound goes away at higher RPMs and lower RPMs.
Any ideads what could cause this and how to fix it?
Re: Sounds like marble at part throttle? (cscollis)
I noticed something similar last year coming home from the 50th anniversary activities. If I was cruising along in 6th gear under 2k rpm, I would here this "tink" "tink" sound from under the car. Would that describe what you heard? Some here told me it was carbon buildup or something, but I haven't done anything about it. Doesn't happen at all once I get past 2k rpm.

I've got it too, and the decarb procedure did nothing to fix it. I thought I read that it might be a loose O2 sensor bung, but I haven't investigated yet.

If your CATs over heated the brick inside melts and breaks up! Get a rubber mallet and rap on the cats and mufflers. The material usually ends up in the mufflers! If you have loose material , when you rap on the componets it will rattle.

Scott when mine was runnign rich my cats melted and it didn't make noise, it just lost power.
I was getting rid of the cats anyway, now I have a reason. It is either the cats or exhaust somewhere. I will take it to RPM when I get back from Houston and have them cut the cats and see if that fixes it.
