Bought an '01 vert late last year with 23K miles. Before the factory warranty ran out, I decied to buy the GMPP warranty from Ken Fitchner (thanks Ken!).
For the first couple of months I drove her, I didn't really notice anything abnormal, but over the last month, she developed a really annoying piston slap on a cold sartup. After a couple of minutes the engine would get warm, and it would go away, but that didn't make me feel any better. I did a lot of piston slap research on the forum, but wasn't convinced this wouldn't hurt the long term reliability of the engine. So, I dropped her off last night at the dealer to let them do a cold start in the morning and make a diagnosis for themselves.
They called earlier today and said the piston slap was louder than normal, and they're going to replace the pistons (the new teflon coated ones), rings (with the reinforced wipers) and bearings - everything covered under warranty. Am I glad I bought that warranty!
If you have piston slap, take it in and have the dealer check it out!
As a side note, I figured while they were at it, I could get them to replace the clutch, and maybe do some other mods, too. The service manager asked me to come in and talk to their vette specialiast - wow, was I impressed! He walked me over to his work bay to explain the whole process, and already had the intake manifold off and push rods out. As it turns out, they replace the bottom end with the motor in the car - leave the cam and lifters in - trans on, too. He also mentioned any mods beyond stock would void the warranty - so looks like no engine mods for awhile.

Re: piston slap fixed under GMPP extended warranty (vertte)
Good Deal , The warranty just paid for itself $$$$ on 1 visit  Did You take Your car to Bill Kay or Woodfield Chevy ? :seeya
Re: piston slap fixed under GMPP extended warranty (TT_Vert)
I haven't worked with Woodfield Chevy before; this is the first time I ever brought the car in for service since buying it. However, I can say they are extremely helpful, friendly, straight shooters, no bullpoopie. Their vette guy said he had done over 100 ring and/or piston jobs, so it was very easy leaving my vette there to have the job done.
Re: piston slap fixed under GMPP extended warranty (vertte)
Just got the car back yesterday - the dealer installed the new pistons, rings, bearings and broke the engine in by Friday (a 4 day turn, very impressive). I didn't think a week would seem so long! Anyway, started her cold this morning and sounded like a normal engine again! Hopefully everything will be fine from here on out.
