Default Determining Differential ratio

Is there an easy way to determine gear ratio? I bought the car used and don't have the window sticker. Can you tell by VIN, or code on car anywhere? Tach shows about 1950 rpm at 70 MPH.

Thanks :steering:

If it's a M6, then it's 3.42. If it's an A4, look in your glove compartment where all the RPOs are listed. If you see G92, it's got a 3.15 otherwise it's a 2.73.

Or you can throw it into 3rd (A4) and drive at 75mph. If you're turning 3150 RPM's you've got a 3.15, 2730 RPM = 2.73 ... and so on.

It's an A4. I looked in the glove box but didn't see any listings of any kind. Could the list be elsewhere, or is it hard to see?

Thanks :steering:

If its an MN6 out it in fourth and set the cruise at 80 mph, for an a4 put it in 3 and set the cruise at 80 mph, what ever you tach it at divide by 100 and that is your rear end ration. So for example an MN6 should sit at exactly 3420 rpm at 80mph in 4th gear. so your ratio is 3:42.

The correct code is G92 and it located under one of the lift off compartment lids in the rear area of the coupe. If I remember correctly it is the compartment on the left and if not check the others. If it's not a G92 code
you have the 2:73 ratio. Hopefully you have the G92...this is a much better rear end and costs as an option only $100.00 extra.

That is the easy answer... ;)

:iagree:
But I believe it was a $300 option and yes it was still worth it. Wish mine had it. Sounds like he has the 3.15 if it is at 1950 at 70 in 4th gear I assume. Mine will run close to 80 at same RPM (2.73 gears :( )

NPH2005..we are both right. It was $100.00 option in 97 and later on
the option increased to $300.00. I dont have the black book with me
but after reading the post I remembered that tidbit of information. Worth
every penny!
