Re: Plug Wires? (Jharms)
You'll probably get a lot of replies to this one. As long as you stick to one of the major and/or well known companies, you can just pick your favorite. I like the Magnecor KV85's, but MSD, Taylor, Accel and yes even Delco(Delco makes a "high performance" C5 in red) make good wires also. Some people want to be able to re-use their factory metal heat shields on the plug boots. Some brands are designed such that you can re-use the heat shields and some are not. The fact that a particular design of plug boot not allowing the re-use of factory heat shields however, does not mean that they are not quality pieces.
It pretty much comes down to picking one you like, at a price you like and maybe the color you like too. HTH
I've read in other forums that .55 to .60. The person said that the NGK iriiduims came set at .57 and he kept them that way. I really don't know. I'm just repeating what I've read.
Just going memory, I want to say it's supposed to be .40. A TSB was put out recently. You would do well to find that. I believe the stock platinums are supposed to be .60, and I'm sure it's not the same for the iridium.
A few weeks ago I swapped out my original plugs with NGK Iridiums and I went with MSD 8.5mm plug wires. The original heat shields fit perfectly. Sure smoothed out the idle.
I took the suggestions from the forum members and will be replacing my plugs with NGK Iridium plugs (7164) and wires with MSD 8.5mm plug wires (32819). I did quite a bit of price shopping so I thought I'd pass the information along. There may be better prices available...but my fingers got tired.
NGK TR55IX (7164) Iridium Plugs
$6.25 each
Free shipping but $3.95 handling (a little misleading) http://www.autopartsgiant.com
MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Wire Set (32819)
$48.95
$7.75 for shipping/handling (a little high) http://www.sdpc2000.com
I'm not promoting these sites. I've never done business with them before today. I just thought I'd save somebody some research time if they were searching for these same items.
I've been running NGK Iridiums at factory gap and use GM performance wires with shorty headers for a couple of years. The car runs great and no heat issues with the wires...

I'm ready to change my plugs and wires on my 98 C5 convertible. I'm getting NGK Iridium plugs. Any suggestions on the best wires to use?
Unless you want to do it for cosmetics or greater heat sheilding the stock plug wires are awfully good. GM says unless the wire exceeds 700 ohms they are good to go. Mine weren't even close to that.
Installing wires with a very low impedence won't mean much as the resistor plug itself is over 5,000 ohms and is in series with the plug wire. Plenty of voltage in those coil packs to go around. :)

I did the exact same thing. Same result. I believe I gapped mine at .45...
IMHO, wires are cheap. Might as well replace them while you're chaning the plugs since they are mighty close to the exhaust manifold. My #5 and #7 wires were in bad shape @ 40k miles. :smash:
First the gap, I would recommend that you go around .050 for a car with a few bolt-ons. The factory ignition really does not have much trouble with blowing out the flames or flame propagation.
We have been using the Taylor Thundervolts for a while now and they are awesome. The wires are 50 Ohm resistance per foot and they are 10.4mm thick! They work great and they seem to last forever! I had them on my SCed car for 3 years without a problem pushing 570 RWHP and driving every day!
Lastly, we are just about to put the Taylor Thundervolts on sale. They are regular price $74.95. They will be selling for $59.95.
NGK TR55's or TR6's will be $1.95 a piece and Iridiums will be $6.69 a piece.
