When sitting in stop and go traffic around town I usually keep it in 2nd to avoid the constant 1-2 shift. However, when I sit in 2nd gear at a stop there is much more driveline vibration/noise. If I pop it into 3 and let it roll a few inches so it downshifts into 1, the noise goes away. Or if I slightly roll in 2nd the noise goes away. But at a dead stop in 2nd there is quite a bit more vibration/noise.
Anyone else have this experience? I'm wondering if it is just driveline/transmission harmonics.
I would not do this.....let the tranny do it's job as designed. Idleing in 2nd is creating extra drag & heat as well as lugging the motor down.
I believe the idle is about the same. But if it drops even a little bit, that could explain the vibration. The fluid and filter were changed about 10K miles ago.

I have the same problem and the mine make the noise also 9in Drive!!! and if i changed to the neutral because i don't like this noise it dissappear
I thought also that is the oil because i did mnever changed this.
i also noted that if i found the point in wich my tranny make noise and turn the front wheels left right the noise increase!!!!
I'm also considering the torque converter is it possible that in the converter there is something broken???
Thanks for all and please inform me about the solution
i don't shift it manually!!!! i never did it!!!
Anyway in the drive position the noise appear not ever but it's possible that it appears
thanks
I know for a fact that if you place your gear selector into second gear the car will start out in second not first from a stop. It might possibly be loading up the drivetrain and be causing the noise. Where is the noise eminating from? Front, back?
sounds like the load on teh converter.. keep it in 3rd instead of overdrive more power and less shifting in stop go traffic OD is for better mpg if thats possible =)
I don't think there is anything wrong with your car. Start a MN6 in 2nd or 3rd and I'm sure you would get vibrations. Let the automatic do its job or go for the MN6.
Mr I said that i never put my tranny in the first second or third!!! i only take it in DRIVE !!!!! and in this way sometimes when i stop there is a noise as a roarrrr from the back and if i put my tranny from D to N the noise disappear and obviously it is because i shut the charge to my tranny or my converter!!!!
Thanks
Gas milage lol! There are toyotas and hondas that get worse gas milage than my 2.73 C5:) I drafted behind an F-250 on the interstate for 150 miles and ended up with 34.5 mpg. And I bet I'm gonna see 12's with just some predator tuning.
The way I understood it was that putting it in 2nd would just stop the trans from shifting into 3rd. The car would still use 1st and the 1-2 shift would happen normally. At least thats how other automatics work and I would have guessed that it would have been the same on the Vette. Is that not the case?
It only does it when I'm totally stopped. There is no noise or vibration when I let off the brake and start rolling, only when I am stopped. I'm going to assume it is because of the RPMs dropping too low because of the slightly higher load being in 2nd creates.
Thanks for the opinions, but I'll probably keep doing it this way. I just makes my driving experience in traffic more tolerable. I've done it on several cars and haven't wrecked a transmission yet.
BTW, I think the primary reason for having it start in 2nd from a stop when selected is for poor traction situations, snow etc.
First of all..If you feel you need to drive manually(and I do too) Get your self a Transgo shift kit!! more info here [ur]www.transgoperformance.com[/url] It will allow you to upshift ,downshift hold any gear for as long as you wish and the each shift will be much crisper. Otherwise you should be letting the car shift from 3.. OD on the highway. :yesnod:
The 4L60E if the gear selector is in 2nd will manually be in second. Even from a dead stop. Not adviseable.
Interesting.. from a stop mine starts out in 1st, then it clicks into second gear. I know this based off engine speed and vehicle speed to determine what gear I am actually in.
NOW if this is a new noise/vibration, I am betting it's one of a few things, Flex Plate might be cracked, Converter Might be trashed, Front Pump on the Trans Might be Trashed..
OR maybe and this is a slight chance that one of your clutch packs is starting to burn, and it's slipping slightly and gripping and causing a shudder/vibration.
My suggestion is take it to a trans shop have them check it out, it might save you a few grand. Or keep driving it till it blows up, like most people do(not nessarily corvette owners)!:jester

A couple of the guys responding to this post are correct. If you put the trans selector in 2nd, the car will start and stay in 2nd. This is a feature that allows you to start or "take off" more easily in low traction situations, like snow, ice, etc. Most GM and other auto trans' have this feature. Don't do this in heat or heavy traffic. I would never recommend this unless you are having difficulty getting traction. Drive line shudder and excesss heat are a result of this. My best recommendation is to leave the selector in drive during normal driving, such as traffic. I spent 10 years with GM (in their GMPP claims area) and saw a bunch of mechanical failures when customers inadvertantly abused their vehicles. Add a 2.73 gear ratio, large tires, a heavy foot, heat, traffic and 2nd gear start, and you will have problems. I hope this helps. :chevy
