Default Torque Converter Vibration

I just installed a new set of 3.42's and a Precision Industries Torque Converter with a 2700 stall. I am experiancing a vibration between 3200 and 4200 RPM's when accelerating/decelerating hard or revving the engine hard in neutral in the same RPM range. I can both feel and hear the vibration, yet when I'm cruising it's gone! (The shop thinks it's the vanes in the converter and said I shouldn't be concerned, however, I dont' have a clue how a converter works much less what's inside one!) The car performs great and I'm really happy with the change. Has anyone else experianced this situation and is it something I should worry about?

Have them try indexing the converter. In simple terms remove the three bolts and rotate it 1/3 and bolt it up and test drive it until its OK. :flag

That sounds like a reasonable approach. Can that be done without removing the trans? Seems like I recall that there is an inspection cover that allows access to the converter bolts.

Thanks! :)

I would phone up Precision Industries and see what they have to say. To me it sounds like the converter is way out of balance and that can not be good :(

I have the same problem with a Precision Industries Vigilante 3000. But the vibration is there no matter what throttle amount or gear or speed. It's only related to rpm and comes from the back.

Indexing does not seem a good idea, since the torque converter and driveshaft should be balanced independently of each other. Maybe that would make sense if the factory converter and driveshaft were balanced together.

:iagree:
This is one of the suggested fixes straight out of the service manual for vibration in the drive train.

How many miles have you tolerated the vibration? Have you driven the caar hard at all i.e. drags, road course?

It's a mild vibration and not heavy, just enough to notice when passing through a certain rpm range. I installed the converter 6 weeks ago with the FLP trans. I thought it was associated with getting used to a high stall and not getting the fluid level right, or the trans rubbing against something. I've only driven it really hard on an EASE run, but all driving has been on the street with street tires.

Just got off the phone with Precision Industries, looks like I'll have to send the converter back. They are standing by their warranty and want to make it right. The downside is that my ride will be down for 10+ days with shipping, evaluation, reinstall, etc.... I'll give you a post when it's all done. :(

Glad to hear that PI will make it right. I have a PI 2800 stall with a FLP level IV and Z06 3.42 gears. No problems :flag
