Well, I did a search but came up with nothing. Is there anything that can be done with a 2.73 rear to replace the gears without having to replace the whole carrier? Seems like everything I have read tells me that the whole case needs to be replaced, and wife would just not understand me removing a major part from a brand new car... Are there replacement gears that can be installed in this rear end? Thanks for any help
There is a vendor who uses a 2.73 carrier and installs other gears. Perhaps someone will chime in.
Nothing wrong with the 2.73s, I have them, on my 2003 coupe. You might want to get all that you can out of them before changing. Especially on a brand new car. For example I use the Predator which allowed me to, among other things, change shift points, firmness, and remove torque management.
My best 1/4 mile time is 13.246 on my stock runflats and with a 2.0x 60ft time. I have since added the Blackwing and am on the fence about gears vs long tube headers due to warranty issues.
Both good thoughts - find the vendor who has the other gears, or just make up for the lower ratio with overwhelming horsepower... I'm finding quite a difference in this car from my '99 with a 3.42 and 6-speed, and hoping to get a little closer to the kind of performance I used to have. I've heard good things about adding the Transgo shift kit to firm things up a bit, and that looks promising, too. Headers and certainly intake and exhaust are on the way also.
Do not know if they can help you but sent you some names and numbers on email.
BUT if you want to go with 3.42 gears I know you can get them on here for 500.00 plus labor of I guess 400.00. It will cost you about 950.00 to put new gears labor and material in your carrier unless you are going to do labor yourself then in that case buying a used one for 500 is the cheapest way out. You can also get some value MAYBE for your 2.73.
krl - good info, and I know you've been doing your homework lately on this, too. You are right on the used set - $500-ish is right around the price I've seen them at. Keep my case and swap the whole thing out. Then I can still go back to stock if needed, etc. Just need to figure the programming out if I do it myself. The others you sent me are right in line, too. Thanks
Check with Mike Mercury I think I read a post if you only go to 3.42 no programming may be necessary. If you get LS1 edit and you know you will then Eric can do it. That is my plan.
