i had exhaust cutouts installed today. they are mounter just before the over-the-axl bend in my Corsa indys. the interior resonance is unbearable. i drove the damn thing for 20 minutes and had severe ear ache for about 2 hours. its the drone that is killing me and seems to happen at any rpm. i still have the corsas on, but they arent doing much with the cutouts in place. from the outside the car sounds downright mean. also i believe i may have lost some torque. enough for it to be noticable while driving. any thoughts? if i cant get rid if this im just gonna cap them and go back to using just the corsas. would a borla straight pipe cause the same drone?
There are MANY exhaust systems that are louder than stock but the draw back is resonance!!!! Most all of the aftermarket systems have resonance. One of the systems that has NO resonance and sounds good is the ZO6 Ti exhaust!
the corsas by themsleves didnt produce any resonance that i was aware of, but the cutouts are killing me. is there anyway to get a nasty mean sound without resonance? the corsas are simply not aggresive enough
I am planning on doing a similar setup, except I will be putting dynomax bullet mufflers right before the cutouts. I had a similar setup on my old Camaro, it had a really bad rasp before I added the bullet.
Another trick is to point the cutouts at each other (your pipe extensions, that is). Pointing it at the ground makes the sound bounce off the asphalt, from what I understand.
Just a thought.
Dynomax bullets are like $30-35 a piece at Summit.
I was thinking of putting a cutout into one of my Z06 Ti mufflers. Maybe you could do the same, one muffler normal, one empty with a cutout inside and a removable panel on top.
I ran straight pipes out the back and then added SuperTraps to them. The straight pipes resonated viciously in the 1500 to 2000 rpm range where I do most of my driving. I could barely hear the radio. With the SuperTraps the resonance was reduced but still unbearable. Not cars that you would want to take a long trip in.
Now that I have the Z I will keep its mufflers since I would have to give up the weight savings of the Ti mufflers for just a small HP increase. Most of the aftermarket mufflers that are light enough are also too loud.
Are they electric cutouts? I have the Qtecs mounted in the same place as you describe and yes, there is a resonance. Its bearable only because I know I can go back to stock in 4 seconds with just a flip of the switch. The sound from the outside is awesome and very intimidating. I don't know why you would lose torque though. I experienced just the opposite.

The loss of tq is due to no backpressure which almost everyone will tell you looses some tq down low in the RPM range but you will get the HP gains up top.
the electric cutouts will arrive next week. cant wait. they are the McCord cutouts not the Qtec, figured i'd save a $100 bucks. i'm also gonna experiement with putting the bypass near the mufler tieing the inlet before the mufler to the outlet right after the muffler and put the electric cutout right there. when it is closed it will have to run through the muffler but when open it will go straight to the tips. maybe the dump being behind the car instead of under it will help, we'll see.
