Just checking to see if anyone besides myself have had their ASP underdrive
pulley back off.
Seems that the bolt just backed itself off, resulting in a ruined pulley.
Talked to the guys at Speedtek, the shop that did the work and the statements were along the lines of "We have never seen anything like that"
They were not willing to replace the pulley. The pulley was on the car for about 14 months.
I feel that this is not a warranty issue but defective workmanship. It seems that if the pulley and bolt was properly installed this would not have happened.
Am I wrong in my assumptions? Do these pulleys commonly walk off the crank?
i myself have never seen a underdrive pulley walk off the balancer i have seen a balancer come off the crankshaft but not the ud pulley come off although its likely it could happen who put it on ? thats what i would be asking if it was a speed shop i would think theywould replace it .just think the guys putting on your ud pulley he then walks over to the water foutain to get a drink of water then he goes to the bathroom takes a leak comes back & starts putting your k member back together not remembering if he tighten them bolts down or not thats why i am skeptical about who works on my car If i put it on i would torque the **** out of the bolts just my 02 worth btw where you driving down the road & it came off? that could be a night mare
In my '99 SS I had a Whisper pulley come really close to falling off the car after 6 months. Then I went to an MTI pulley as it was supposed to be better... well 2 months later it was loose. Basically, yes, it happens. I'd recommend anyone that has one check it every oil change just to have peace of mind.
Oh, BTW, those bad boys need some serious torque when you put them on, and the bolt is Torque To Yield, so you never want to re-use them, no matter what a tuner (like Mike Morgan) will tell you. :mad

I had just stopped the car and heard the noise, sounded like a rod at first.
The bolt was making all the noise against the steering rack. I am installing the new pulley and bolt, right after the new cam and timing chain.

I have talked to "mechanics" that say they have and will re-use TTY bolts.
That could be my problem. ;) You know that will save you seven whole dollars.
It seems to me that if they have never seen this before and they were the ones that were paid to tighten the bolts that came loose , that possibly they under tightened pulley resulting in damage. And like someone mentioned , I had my gears changed by a very reputable company, the first trip home the passenger side exhaust fell down, i fixed it on freeway temp. And when i got home i found many bolts that were loose and about to fall off. They broke it in wrong so the gears went out at about 100 miles they fixed them and once again i took the 75 mile drive i thought was worth the peace of mind in having a good shop install, when i got home the oil drain plug was no joke 1 thread from falling off. They also forgot to tighten the E brake cable hold downs so the tires bubbed through the cable lining and the sensing wires for the traction control. If i lost all my fluid on the freeway the rearend would probably have grenaded and i could have been in a serious accident. When i left them a message about what happened, and i wasn't angry, they didn't even call me back. cancelled 7,500$ brake kit i ordered and they will never touch my car again.
I've had a pulley (not ASP) come off. It is not the pulley itself or even the install in most cases. Modified motors that spin up real fast will work the crank bolt loose eventually. I feel ALL tuners should be pinning the pulleys to the crank after any kind of h/c or nitrous install, etc, especially after the puley has been off once. Key the pulley and crank. All will be fine. Magnuson has a pinning kit that comes with everything you need to drill two holes into the snout of the crank/pulley then tap the two .250" diameter dowls pins in and install new crank bolt to 175lb/ft.
Sure you can! Drill a hole through the pulley and into the crankshaft. Then hammer in the pin.. You will need to move the steering rack out of the way to do it... but that damn pulley will never come off! :smash: If you cant do it, take the car to a shop that can.
Pinning is a great idea. My ASP pulley backed off on me after about 4 months of use. I changed to a ARP bolt and the problem never returned (ran the car that way for about 1 1/2 years). With my stroker I think I will take vetterdstr's advice and pin it with the ATI pulley.

Speedtek huh? Well, I've only been to Speedtek once, during one of their $35 DynoDays. :skep: They were giving away a high performance part to the car which dynoed the greatest horsepower that day. :skep:
Every single person I talked with down there, was dynoing 20rwhp less than any other dyno in town. It seemed to me to be a bunch of shady lookin' characters that ran the place. I had just left 21MC with my new H/C kit 2 weeks earlier, when I pulled in there and it was finally my turn for the dyno. The guy seemed nervous about doing my car for some reason. He never asked me anything about the car, so before he got started I told him, "Hey, don't you want to know whether or not I have a high stall converter in this car?" He says..."No, it's not important"...yeah, right! So he intentionally never locks the converter and skews the dyno numbers! :mad
Anyway it turns out the only way you could run decent numbers on their dyno, is if your mods came from THEIR shop! :bs
Never been back since. So, could be part of your problem is Speedtek! :yesnod:
