Default Ceramic Brake Pads

Could someone explain to me the advantages / disadvantages of ceramic brake pads? Do they wear out rotors quicker than conventional pads? Thanks. :auto:

Looking forward to some answers. They may be my next mod. I'm tired of the front wheels looking dirty the same afternoon after I clean them.

I use raybestos quiet stop ceramic brake pads. They generate very little dust on my chrome wheels. I had hawk pads before. The ceramics stop fine If you aren't making lots of high speed stops but if you are you will notice fade. I love them though because of clean rims and I don't drag race so they suit me fine. Autozone to purchase :hurray:

I have been running Delco ceramic pads for about 8,000 miles.
With ceramic pads, I do not need to clean the wheels as often.
They appear to be rotor friendly. :D
Last night I installed a set of Carbotech Bobcat (1521) ceramic pads.
They should be a little more aggressive than the Delco's.

IMO they are great as long as you don't use them for high speed track events. Would be my choice for day to day driving.

A lot less dust to clean up. Generally quiet and well suited for highway use, daily driving, etc.

Not as agressive as aftermarket pads for high-performance use.

Have Raybestos Q ceramic/metallic for over 3 years. No dust on rims but all over the back and tail lights + some on the lower front fenders. Much less dust than factory.

Raybestos Quiet Stop- Low dust, no noise, and nominal rotor wear. As others have said, use something else for track or they will fade; worse than oem in this regard.

Just added GM ceramic pads yesterday. I'm hoping they dust lest. I have noticed less stopping power already, especially noticeable coming up to stop signs, red lights, etc. where the brakes feel a bit more "slippery."

Wait until the pads "break in" they do stop better especially if you just changed the rotors.

When you change pad compound/brand you need to clean your rotors as the old pad has left a slight deposition layer on the rotor. clean rotor with med grid sand paper and wipe with acetone to allow new pads a clean surface to bed in on. Make for much faster bed in.

I used GM Ceramic brake pads, they dusted very little and it was white dust. But they stopped poorly, you had to press brakes harder. Then they warped my stock rotors. I took them off with about 50% pad left.

I went with HAWK HPS pads, stop GREAT and dust less than stock pads. Will keep with these.

the ceramics are great for normal driving - I think they actually feel a bit stronger when cold than the high-perf pads which are designed for optimum braking when hot - the ceramics should not be hard on rotors and are very dust-free. If you are planning any track time at all though , do Not use ceramics ... lots of fade at high temps.

i've run ceramics on most of my cars for the last 10 years or so without any rotor wear. Hawk, Delco, and Br-something name brand. less dust, but as mentioned, more hot fade. i only ever noticed this when my buddy and I were out acting like idiots late at night (bear in mind, this town shuts down at 8pm, we werent doing stupid things around other people) and racing his souped up Acura against my almost stock C5. even then, i was told had i gone with a better fluid that it might have helped with that anyway. maybe somebody here can comment, im no brakes expert.

even if drag racing, unless you're hot lapping, i think they'd be fine there too. i put Hawk HPS on my wife's car cus she's a morbid driver, but im content to stop marginally slower and clean less the hawk HPS and Rotora rotors on my wife's TL will sling you through the windshield though. if you drive like a monster, get the HPS and just clean your wheels a little more. you'd feel stupid rear ending somebody with a shiny car, after all.

I've used both Semi Metallic and Ceramic. I'm glad most of you are happy with the ceramics. My experience is different. They do dust a little less, but they still do dust, although it isn't corrosive (doesn't turn rusty if left unchecked) I prefer semi-metallics. A good set dusts very little, they have more consistent braking, and I find that when ceramics get hot they tend to squeal....I hate squealing brakes. (in my experience on several different cars, they squeal when they get warm even with fresh rotors) I've only really had one set out of 8 that didnt' exhibit squealing. (even though mostly it's not too bad...and yes I used insulators and in many cases a quieting liquid)

Oh...one positive....they're pretty easy on the rotors.....

There is a lot of personal opinion about rotors/pads out there. You've just got to go the route your're happy with.

Default Do you want to stop the car or have it look NICE?

If you want lighter brake dust get ceramic.
If you want to STOP THE CAR get semi-metallic.
I like my brakes to stop the car not rear end some schmuck who jumps in front of me and drives like a slug. Had this happen on the interstate.
Moron in a Sanford and Son truck jumped into my lane and I missed rear ending him by INCHES. My semi-metallic brakes did the job. Forget the brake dust. Brakes are made to stop the car not to make it look pretty.

the guy would have to pull out and do that to you repeatedly for the fade to be that bad :P when we say they fade, we dont mean when you run to the grocery store you risk flying off the road..

I can easily do an ABS inducing panic stop from 60mph (even with sticky 275/30/19's on the front) with the ceramics so I have no clue how others think they don't stop. Now, if I had to do 2 or 3 panic stops in a row there could be a problem but certainly not with one hard stop.
