I have been having some trouble as of late with my 2001 ragtop. Almost to the mile(11 miles) while decelerating off the freeway I will get a warning on the DIC/HUD..."OIL TEMP HIGH"...it will read 399 degrees, tell me to "REDUCE ENGINE RPMS" and then within 5-10 seconds I can watch the temp come down from 399, 395, 380, 350, 200, and then normal. I can reset the warning light and it may or may not do it again a few minutes later. This is usually after a mellow 70mph cruise and usually when the ambient temp is around 40- 50 degrees. Interestingly, the waterr temp is well within normal. It is obvious to me that there is a problem with the, or a, sensor. Chevrolet dealer could not reproduce it, found no thrown codes and so won't fix it. Have any of you had similar? If so what was it? Never happened to you??? Then just throw out an idea....all is appreciated. :banghead:
We'll have a fix for you tomorrow. A completely new setup from Halltech with a Setrab 19 row oil cooler, XRP fittings and stainless braided lines, CM 8 micron filters, with a remote filter setup. All billet aluminum parts.
I agree with the last poster. Your oil could not be that hot. Our Halltech F1 Twin Turbo actually runs oil through the CHRA on both turbos, creating a heat sink for the oil, and we never see temps above 240 degrees.
Your oil would actually be beyond the flash point of the synthetic Mobil 1 at around 340 to 360 degrees.
Simple fix at the dealer or DIY. A new sending unit should solve the problem.
I agree with all of you. My impression is a sensor/sending unit issue. There is NO WAY that it could get that hot in 40 degree weather and with the engine temp otherwise normal and with only normal driving. Then there is NO WAY that the temp would drop to normal over seconds. As we all agree, and all see it as a relatively easy fix.....dealer does not want to change anything until they can "see" it. Isn't that nice? And my warranty expires in the middle of April!
If you know how to make the fault happen then do it and when the message pops up take a picture of it and what it shows the oil temp, if you can't do this then maybe a new dealership is in order.
Of course you could always change the sensor yourself, it's located right above the oil filter.
