Default Zip Tie Mod Impressions.

Well on Saturday night I was BORED and I wanted to do something. I FOUND some zip ties and a IDEA clicked. I went to the car and started the mod. I was literally done in 20 mins and it took me like 10 mins to figure out how to get off the grommets. I didnt want to break anything. I had to zip tie 4 zip ties per section because I had small ones (8 in total). I got to get some big ones. Well on sunday I did a little cruising and went to tobay beach.

Well my first impressions are that it Definetly WORKS.
The car "feels" like its breathing better and revving a little faster. Top end I feel like it gained power. I also noticed my car runs noticeably cooler with the mod. My coolant temp was at 190-193 crusing before. NOW its 181-187 Crusing around. Thats a good 6-9 degrees cooler.

Im very happy. For 20 mins of my time and some zip ties. We will see how it performs at the track.. Ill keep you guys updated. I do recommend this MOD to anyone who is running around with the stock intake setup.

Does anyone know where or what part number the K&N replacement is.

Thanks guys

Yes, it does work. I have used twin-cone and Donladson intakes in the past and always lost low end torque. The zip-tie mod opens up the intake for better top end breathing. Be sure to use the filter tray cover with the ties so that the filter seals completely.

I used that method for the first 16K miles of my dad's car's life. Then he switched over to the blackwing. Now that thing screams.

Make sure you get some sort of a hood seal so water doesn't pour on top of your filter. :)

I almost did the zip tie thing, but drilling holes in the stock box was just as easy, and I don't have to worry about a zip tie every becoming loose.

It's nice having some inexpensive mods around!

My coolant temp was at 190-193 crusing before. NOW its 181-187 Crusing around. Thats a good 6-9 degrees cooler.

Can someone explain how an engine would run this much cooler by just doing the zip tie mod? Any technical types have an answer?

Dont have technical info but the reason I "think" its running cooler is simple. More cold air feeding the motor. Less restrictions its breathing better. Thats pretty much it. I honestly dont know WHY its running cooler. But I promise you it is. I dont have any reason to lie, its a FREE MOD  . This is just a real world experience. At most when cruising my coolant temp reads 187, usually around low 180s. Sometimes it even dips in the high 170s when cruising. Before I would usually cruise around low 190s (193) and every now and then dip into the high 180s.

Whatever it is, the car is breathing better and running cooler and im happy for 20 mins of time and NO COST!

I have used many different air filters and air mods over the years and never noticed the engine to bet cooler because of it. I'm not saying you are making this up, just saying maybe there are other reasons for this to happen besides just opening up the air intake to the engine.

I dont know. Its been getting warmer here in NY so outside temps dont matter.

You do have interesting point though, Im interested too on why the car is running cooler...because it definetly IS.

Watch the intake after the filter closely. Ty Wraps have no elasticity and can loosen with heat and vibration. When that happens the filter can leak around the edges and let dust in.

I did the Zip tie mod, went to the track the next day and ran a 13.9 best. Switched to a Blackwing with a cold air cover and went to the track the next day and ran a 13.59. thats the only mod done for now.

Im sure conditions play a role. A intake vs stock shouldnt be that much of a difference.
