I just replace my transmission (6 spd manual) with a used one purchased on this board. The tranny was shipped dry. I put the correct amount of ATF in. The problem is that I can't push the car with it in neutral. I still have the engine out of the car for now. Could the reason for the tranny not spinning freely be because the fluid was drained and the tranny has not run yet? I winched the car up on a trailer but when I went to let it down off the trailer, it would not coast down hill. Like I said, it is in neutral with no engine in the car.
I don't think it's due to the tranny being dry (hard to be really dry since it's been used), but more like something is binding or jammed. If you don't have the engine installed, how are you supporting the torque tube and/or tranny? How do you know the tranny is in neutral when you can't turn the wheels?
I have the torque tube tied up. It is in neutral according to where the shifter lever is located, not sure about what is actually happening inside the tranny. I wouldn't have thought being dry would have been a problem either, just grabbing at straws and trying to give all the details to be considered.
Without it being located fore/aft, mounted to the engine, I don't think you know which gear it's in. About the only way I could think you could reasonably think it's in neutral is by getting the shifter into the mid gate.
It turns out that the back brakes are holding the wheels tight for some reason. I'll check them closer when I get time. I marked the front shaft coming out of the torque tube and it did not turn at all after the wheels had been turning from pulling it off the trailer. It makes me feel better that the problem was not the tranny.
