The message center tells me to service vehicle soon. I checked the computer codes and I get the following code: 28-TCS-C1281H (Steering Sensor Uncorrelated Malfunction). I cleared the code the code message came back.
Does anyone know what would cause this message? I recently removed the instrument gauges.
What is the sensor used for? Is there a problem with driving the car the way it is?

C1241 indicates an open, short to ground, or short to voltage in the Variable Effort Steering (VES) actuator or the circuits to the actuator.
VES uses the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) to control current to an electronic actuator. At low speeds this actuator assists the hydraulic power steering to make steering easier, at moderate speeds the actuator does not assist steering (hydraulics only), and at high speeds the actuator creases additional steering resistance.
When C1241 is set the VES system is disabled, that is you only have your hydraulic power steering working. The diagnostic tests use a scan tool to monitor the VES at various vehicle speeds in order to isolate the problem.
