I put a Yanks 3600 in my C5 and was checking the transmission temperature. It read as high as 217 deg. Is that high?
It all depends on the driving conditions. For reference, I have a stock converter and a healthy tranny... my temps range from 150f - 175f when cruising and go up to 225f in heavy stop-start city traffic. So, if your 217f temp is an average temp, I'd say it's on the high side and you should fit an auxilliary tranny cooler. But, if that temp is just a transient peak, it's nothing to worry about.
My tranny runs 170-190 on average but if i spend a lot of time unlocked at upper throttle than the temp can get as high a 220 for short peroids. Tranny coolers will control overall temps. Synthetics can drop running temp by 15-20 degrees without the tranny cooler and more with it. If you plan to race or spend alot of time on the gas I would due both a tranny cooler with synthetic.
Well.........I've got a better idea of what it does at this point. Under normal driving conditions in typical traffic on a 78 deg day it hits 203-205 deg. This is a Yanks SS3600 so maybe that's normal. I'll talk to the folks where I bought it first but it could be I'll be installing a cooler. Anyone have any recommendations on coolers that are easy to install and work well? Interestingly enough I talked to our local independent Corvette mechanic in this area and he says that those converters don't start working until they get that warm?
A high stall torque converter does two things to the transmission. First when it is unlocked, it multiplies the torque more so than a stock converter which puts more stress on the transmission. In addition, when the converter is unlocked, it heats up the transmission temp significantly.
Neither is good for the life of the transmisssion, especially a 4L60E. Keeping the temperature well below 200 under all conditions with a transmission cooler will help the transmission out a lot and prolong its life.

I HAVE THE B&M, 24000 I INSTALLED it last week end
It is working great ,put it on the condenser just below the Vortex at the bottom of the condenser
hoses up with an extra 4 ft of line from Jegs.Permacool product . Order the line before you start .
If I did it again I would get the race cooler and put stain;less line and fittings on both ends
The Fittings worked on my 2000 c5 , I want to put some kind of sheaving on the lines ,haven’t done it yet
It is 50 in Michigan and the trans has not got above 150 and thats running with 180 on the radiator temp.
The clamps are a little weak I got new ones .
Very important to clamp the line to the air-conditioning line at the radiator top .
If it slides back and is not clamped it kinks the trans line The rubber portion under the car.
With all my screw ups it should be pretty easy for you .
I could do it again in a couple of hours
Use a hose clamp to clamp the steel lines together at the radiator after you remove it put on the supplied fitting and install the hose to the cooler the other cooler line goes on the supplied fitting at the top right side (passenger side ) of the radiator .
I am using all Amsoil Fluids, all is cool
Good Luck

What kind of temps. were you running befor the cooler install? I just had a SY3500 installed and my temps are over 220 after a drive it for more than 45 min. I will have a cooler installed this coming week and am hoping this will fix my problem.
