I just put Redline D4 synthetic tranny fluid in my 1998 M6 with 45,000 miles. Before the change, the tranny was shigting OK, but was getting a little notchy. Now with the Redline in it, it shifts real smooth under normal acceleration. However, and I do mean a big however, when I'm attempting to speed shift (not power shifting, just shifting fast) from third to fourth, it grinds. If I shift regularly, it goes in OK and it down shifts fine into fourth even at high speeds. Any suggestions? This is fairly significant to me as I have my first track day (road course) in May and I understand most of the gear selection once you are up to speed is between third and fourth. Thanks.
Geez guys, come on. Not one reply. Not even a "well, I don't know but have a nice day". Even though I only have a few posts, I've been a forum member for almost four years (more of a lurker than poster) and expected at least a little help. Guess I should have just stayed a lurker.
Thanks guys for the input. Fortunately, the car is still under an extended warranty if it is in fact a synchro. I'll try changing the fluid again and let everyone know what happens. I really appreciate the help. This is the first problem I have had with the car (except column lock) since I have owned it.
This is a typical problem I have seen on Tremecs. Some do not like synthetic ATF. it is not a bad synchro, but rather the ATF being too slippery for the synchros the work correctly.
Drain the ATF and put regular GM ATF back in and it will be alright.
Drain the Red Line and refill with Mobil 1 ATF and I'll bet your problem will cease to exist. Good Luck. I alway's wonder why some owners prefer to use fluids not recommended by G.M. It seems to me that the engineers design the cars requirements for particular brands of fluids for good reasons. Why take it upon yourselves to re- engineer the requirements and open up the possibility of creating unecessary problems That's my 2 CTS. I changed all my fluids at 50,000 miles with factory recommendation fluids on my 99 mn6 and now have 60,000 and fortunately all is A - Ok ! Again, Good Luck and Happy Easter ! :chevy
