Ok so a year ago I replaced the W/P on my 98. The old gasket material was a black paper crap that stuck to the block and took forever to get off. Now the new W/P came with a metalic gasket with a plasit o-ring. Well here is my problem I order a bunch of OEM parts and gaskets to use during my pulley replacement and cam install. The gaskets I was sent for the W/P are the black paper crap ones. Has anyone replaced just the gaskets and received the matalic ones? Can I reuse the metalic ones? I really hated the paper ones. They just plain suck! :cry
Re: Water pump gasket material new or old????? Help (gonbad)
I have not had the honor of replacing my pump BUT, if I had the option of using the paper or new type gasket, I would NOT use the paper type gaskets!! Where do you find the new and improved gaskets unless i had too?? Anybody know who sell the new and improved ones!!??!!
Re: Water pump gasket material new or old????? Help (gonbad)
My old ones looked reusable at 46k miles, but I got new ones anyway. THey are like $5 each (x2) at the dealer.
Might as well pick up an O-ring for the new oil pump while you are there too. Hate making all those pesky parts runs while doing the h/c swap. Seems to always be just one more thing forgotten.
Re: Water pump gasket material new or old????? Help (gonbad)
All LS1's from 99 onwards used the nice metal gaskets, and you can just reuse them. If you dont want to, all GM dealerships sell the gaskets for a few bucks.
I didnt even know they still made the paper ones, those arent used on any models that I knew of.
Re: Water pump gasket material new or old????? Help (runamuk)
I bought these from Bob at Fichtner. I called him up and he told me if you tell the parts people you have a 97-99 C5 they will get you the paper gaskets. I did not tell Bob that I have a new water pump and wanted or needed the new gaskets. Either way he told me to keep the paper ones and he would priority mail me the metal ones.
So if you do a gasket replacement for any reason make sure you specify the metal gaskets.
