When I installed my new Halltech Stinger intake system, I noticed that there was a 3/8-inch x 1/8-inch piece of debris against my MAF screen, so I left the screen in, figuring this isn't something I'd like to have sucked into the cylinders. Has anyone removed your screen? Should I have removed mine?
Mmmmm. I'll be having my car dynoed next month. I'll see how the new intake does with the screen intact, based on the opinions you guys have posted so far. I guess I can always remove it whenever the next dyno day is held (in a year or so) to see if there is any gain.
To get into the tech info a little more... if you remove your screen, it will make your car run lean. You may feel a slight diff in HP, but it will not last. My car has an aftermarket MAF on it without the screen but it is custom tuned for that... so thats why in your case I said it was not t good thing to do.
The thing to look for in this particular case is how debris gets past the air filter before going through the MAF. I'm screenless and have been for awhile; it runs OK but will run better with a computer re-tune. My idle drops a little low for a moment when coming to a stop. ;)

:iagree:
Thats a pretty big piece of debris that you found and I'd be curious how it got past your filter ???
I have my screen removed (w/ tuning) and the car runs great
The filter the debris passed through was my OEM filter, but it had been removed and repositioned more than once when I installed the Z06 airbox. The filter I have now is the Halltech warhead filter (synthetic, I believe), so I doubt that more debris will get by. I guess the screen is like runflat tires - some security at the expense of performance!
