Spitting Gas
After hours of driving my 98 Vert I noticed a strange sound from the fuel pump. I also smelled gas in the car with the top down. I stopped at a gas station and removed the gas cap. The cap almost blew out of my hand from the pressure. I held the cap half way off and let the hot fumes escape. After 20 seconds or so I removed the cap and gas was spitting out of the tank. I replaced the cap half way and waited for the fumes to escape all the way. I then re-installed the cap and drove off like normal. The fuel pump went back to it's normal humming. Any idea what is going on?

It sounds like your evaporative emission canister and the purge valve are not functioning properly. Your cap is not vented, so that is not an issue. Check for codes and see if that shows anything. The problem is in an emissions related area and allof that stuff is monitored by the OBDII system.

Agree with the above. However, don't screw around with this issue. Unless you're a mechanic, take it to the dealer and have it checked. Don't mess around with fuel system integrity issues.
