I want to install LG long tubes with high flow cats and do a performance tune on an otherwise stock LS1 coupe, but I am worried about emissions testing. Here in Memphis we have a sniffer. Has anyone done this before, or have any experience or guidance ?
Brian,
Here in Oregon, '96 and newer cars get the OBDII test. My 2001 LS1 with FLP's and hiflow cats passed in March with no problem. I was worried that they might do a visual inspection and fail me for modified emissions equipment. But they never even popped the hood or looked underneath. I have kept my stock exhaust out of fear that I would have to reinstall to pass emissions.
TN doesn't use OBDII? You should have no problem passing the sniffer test as long as you have the cats installed. A number of forum posts have reported no problems passing. The visual inspection may be another matter.
Installing headers won't change your emissions numbers. You will pass the sniffer. If they do a visual inspection under the hood, they might fail you if they notice the headers. Just make sure whomever does your performance tune, they know you need to be able to pass smog.
Recently did my emissions check in CA; not only did he not notice the long tubes, he apparently didn't notice the supercharger. She passed with flying colors, runs cleaner than stock. :D
