Default How to take off calipers without bleeding

Is it possible to take off my brake calipers, and clamp the hose so that I don't have to bleed when I put them back on?

I want to paint my calipers and I think removing it is the best way to get a detailed paint job, but I'm worried about having to bleed the brakes.

No. You'll get air into the caliper while it's off the car. Even if you try to refill it by hand you still can't get all the air out.

Also, don't clamp the brake lines, that's bad practice for a very high pressure hose. Instead, use a bolt and flat washers to clamp through the banjo fitting. You'll still probably get some seepage, but it'll keep from draining the system.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Gotcha. So when I re-bleed, there's a special sequence I have to do w/ the ignition, I hear.. Anyone know?

The sequence changes with the newer C5s, not sure when. For my '00 hardtop, the sequence is the traditional RR, LR, RF, LF. As far as the key on, key off, goes, I think that's only if you get air into the ABS. I've never bled mine key on and haven't had any problems.

OTOH, I have had the system throw some codes at me after I've bled the system if my assistant pushed the brake pedal down to the floor. However, after I shut the engine down and started back up, the codes all went away.

Have a good one,
Mike

For just removing the caliper, I have had good luck gravity bleeding. Just put the line back on and then put a hose on the bleeder, open it and let the system slowly bleed on it's own. Also, I have a set of small oak wood blocks that I use with some squares of rubber bicycle tube cut up that I squeeze on the banjo fitting with a C clamp to seal the lines. Have left it that way for weeks without a leak, but hang the C clamp on a wire to keep any strain off of the rubber line. Don't over bend or squeeze the rubber hose though.

You have it correct the sequence changed in 2001 when they went to electronic proportioning.
