Default Water temp sensor location?

My car has a mod that I can't quiet figure out...there is a small pen like rod that has a wire connected to it stuck in the vents in my radiator. I don't know too much about these engines, so I am not sure what it is. It is only a couple of inches long. There is nothing holding it in place...it is just kind of wedged in there.

I do not have any over heating problems or anything like that, but I do have a code that refers to it I think...P0480 FC Relay 1 Control Circuit

Any help would be appreciated. I have this code and I need to figure out why my tac is not working...after those two I will be rid of my check engine light

Probably a temp operated aftermarket fan controler. The stock fan settings don't come on until like 220 unless the A/C is on then usually one fan is always running. Using a fan controler was a cheap way to get the fans to come on sooner. You probably have a lower temp 160-180 thermostat in the water pump. What temps is the water running at under normal conditions? A stock set up will run around 196-200. I have 180 in my car and on the highway cruising along I see water temps of about 178-180. Most people with lower stats get a dyno tune and have the fan temps set lower in the computer.

The actual water temp sensor is in I believe the drivers side head.

:iagree: The limiting part in the C5 cooling system is the radiator. You can have a lower temperature thermostat that will maintain its calibrated temperature on cooler days. Once the outside temperature gets around 85 F,
all C5's should run around 192 to 198 F. The main advantage of a lower temperature T-Stat is that cooler coolant will take more time to get hot when stuck in traffic. There's virtually no cooling when you are stopped, until the fans come on.

I know what sensor he is talking about, it's not an after market part. It's stuck in the lower passenger side of the radiator, definitely stock wiring.
It must do something?
