Everything came off easy. I started with driver side first and it was very tight but got it in after a lot of coaxing.
I cannot get the passenger side in. I removed the starter and valve cover. The left side is jacked up as high as it can go. It does not even look like it can go, not even close. It is hitting below the starter area and it is hitting at the top of the cylinder head and tight up against the frame.
Re: Kooks Header Install, Need Help (vettemaster1)
With the motor mount nut off and the motor raised use a hunk of 2x4 to push the motor over for additional clearance... becareful what you pry against .... Good luck...
Question to you and everyone else that has had headers installed on a Z06/LS6 and purchased OEM gaskets...
Did you buy the gaskets for the LS1 for the round ports on the aftermarket headers or did you use LS6 specific gaskets to accomodate the d-shaped ports on the LS6 heads?
I'm wondering which is the better one to use for better seal and such.
1.) Have you removed the starter?
2.) Remove the nut off of the passenger side motor mount, to let the motor tilt as much as possible towards the driver's side.
3.) have you removed the valve cover? (not sure if this will help, I can't remember)
4.) I was ultimately able to get things in by getting the motor up as high as I good, and then arranging things such that my biggest clearance problem was the frame rail and the A/C line that runs there. Things just slipped around enough to finally go in.
I bought the LS1 97-2000 round ports GM part# 12558573
Valve cover off, spark plugs removed, both motor mount nuts off, engine lifted extremely high, starter removed.
I think I need to move the engine with blocks of wood. I was able to pry the engine with a 2x4 when I did the drivers side and it made all the difference. There really does not seem to be any place where I can pry the motor on the passenger side so if I somehow install a block of wood and insert a wedge a may be able to move it over a little more.
I may not have a chance to try this today but definately tomorrow evening. I appreciate all the great info and I will keep everyone posted as to the resolve. I just hope I don't need to pull the head off. Thanks.
I just got mine done yesterdaay...All of my muscles are sore. OK, first I have $40K in tools so it helped alot. Drivers side took me 15 min after removing all the necessary parts but pass side took me 30 min. Once you remove all the things they said, get a BIG pry bar between the AC compressor and the block and gently push it toward the drivers side, this should give you enough clearance to get the header in. After you get it in, it will be well worth it. I can't get my right foot out of the gas pedal...The sound with Borla Stingers and the mid range power. Enjoy!
Your advice is encouraging. After prying the driver side I kind of figured the passenger side needs some more coaxing. I will try prying at the AC compressor. I will let everyone know how that works out. Thanks.
The key is to lift one side of the engine at a time
This will give you addtional clearence on each side as the engine will rotate about it's axis. :D :D
And one other thing is you have to hold your mouth just right and it will finally drop right in.
No kidding you'll wonder how it fit after it falls in.
....I installed them on my ZO6 and the drivers side was a bee-atch !! I did this side first and was about to regret buying them since I had one side to go.
Passenger side just fell right in. Make sure you jack up on the passenger side of engine and not in middle !
I am using the off-road 3" X pipe and with the Titanium mufflers it sounds like a screaming banshee. Nice power gain also after tuning.
