I just picked up a 04 cpe and need some tire help. I understand the EMT tire is louder, heavier and what else? What tire is a good replacemnet
thanks,Dean
IMO you absolutely should replace, I put Michelin Pilot Sports on and think they are great but after riding in my loud, stiff car anything was better. Do yourself a favor and get rid of them while they have value to someone else.

The pilot sport is a good tire but then your giving up your runflat protection and are you going to feel comfortable going on a long road trip with no spare?

If you want good bang for the buck go for the Kumho MX. There are 2 versions one that has run flat capability and one that doesn't. I went for the non runflat and cary a patch kit, jack, and compressor. http://www.tirerack.com has a lot of tires to pick from.
Currently I am running the Michellin Pilot Sport A/S tires. These are the zero pressure tires from michellin, and are an excellent alternative to the EMT's while maintaining run flat capability. Noise went down and performance went up relative to the factory goodyears.
I switched to Kuhmos. As you already mentioned...they are quieter and smoother. The biggest thing I found though is that they are FAR more predictible. The EMTs start to break loose in more of a "snap" fashion as they get older. I didn't find that they gave much warning. The Kumhos let you know when they are about to break free and do so much more gradually so it is more controlible.
Downside.... yep I got a nail once and had to limp it home with an air compressor. Now I have a can of fix-a-flat just in case.
Z06 tires and wheels (OEM--lighter than aftermarket) were the best change I've ever done to my coupe. See the Car&Driver write-up a while back on C-5 handling. These tires and wheels made the biggest difference!

I believe these are standard on the new Cadillac XLR.
i saw the kumho's and liked them, but i still don't know. I don't feel that they are that loud and i could live with that, but if they're that much heavier maybe i look into changing them. Anyway what are people getting for the EMT's? 1300 miles as of today.
thanks for the replies
You need to make the decision whether you are comfortable without runflats. I switched my run-craps for Michelin Pilot Sports and carry a small compressor and plug kit. Drove approximately 6,000 miles back to BG and Nashville for the 50th without any problems. The Pilot Sports are much quieter with better wet & dry traction. :flag
just this saturday I put Kumho MX's on & the ride is smoother& quiter ,went Wal-Mart & gotta $20 campbell hausfeld compressor/w lite & plugs, the compressor fit in the right rear comp. like its made for it :iagree:
I got rid of the EMT's and now I can actually hear the stereo! ZO6 wheels and NON-runflats is the way to go. Buy an mini air compressor, a can of flat fix, a plug kit, and a AAA card. I went to the Dunlop Sport 9000's and couldn't believe the difference. :chevy

Dont worry about flats, that is what a cell phone and AAA are for. I have drivin up and down the east coast with out a spare tire or getting a flat and 1000+- miles of track time too.. There is always the can of fix a flat to put in your trunk.

Are these the runflats you are talking about? do their sizes fit narrower in the wheelwell than G/yrs? I'm looking to change rears also
I recently put on some GM Z06 wheels with non-runflat Kumho MX 255/40/17 fronts and 295/35/18 rears. After driving around with these, I will never go with runflats again. Now I have a quiet ride, more comfortable, and the car doesn't follow the lines and imperfections in the road anymore. Nice and smooth. Oh yeah, and the price wasn't bad either, $757 shipped for all four.
i waited more than 15K miles to put yoko AVS Sport runflats on, they are much better than the Goodyears, but still not good enough. Next time, i'm going to try a non runflat
