my 98 m6 sat for the winter(5 months), now the fuel gauge reads correct for a couple of minutes on startup then goes to empty, do i need a new sender or can gm flash the computer successfully w/ the updated data(under the tsb), also how much is a new/used sending unit? prob s. unit/fuel pump combo right? -- the "serv. column lock bypass" and "serv. tire press mont sys" are fun to see also, (gm will recall the cl, the tp sensors are dead after the winter) :skep:
I think I would put some injector cleaner in the tank, change brands of gas for 2or 3 tanks and see if that doesn't correct the fuel gauge problem.Reset the problems by clearing them off your computer and see if that doesn't stop.Your problems may or may not be as serious as you think. :chevy :chevy :flag :chevy :chevy
I had this same problem last year. Called GM dealer, they admitted the fuel gauge sensor is very sensitive to 'bad gas' and that it was a common problem last year. Offered to add free injector cleaner for me during next oil change.
I have been having a fuel gauge "problem" for more than 3 1/2 years. GM has known of this defect since at least 1999, if not before. Last week the car had a newly designed "something" installed that was going to solve everything. It lasted about 2 days before the gauge began malfunctioning, again.
In light of the length of time this problem has existed and the number of vehicles that are affected, GM should have a recall. IMHO the only reason GM has not announced a recall is that GM has NO IDEA what to do to fix the problem. They have not known how to fix my car since 1999 notwithstanding many attempts.
From previous experience with the "column lock" problem, the General won't do anything because "it's the right thing to do", but will if there is any kind of hint about a safety consequences. :smash:

I had a similar problem that corrected itself after adding a bottle of Valvoline SynPower Fuel System Cleaner to the gas tank. Others have had success with adding Techron injector cleaner by Chevron. Amoco/BP seems to be an offending gas for the fuel gage from my experience. I'm switching to Shell but others have had good experiences using Mobil. It's a trial and error thing at this point. Good luck!
I used to have the problem quite often. Had the sending units replaced a few years ago and the problem went away for a little while but resurfaced. Coincidentally, the week I had the sensors replaced, a new Texaco opened up by my house where I mostly bought gas. Prior to this I ran mostly Exxon.
I run Texaco and Shell gas only now, and have not had the problem since. I had to fill up with a tank of Exxon once, and the problem came back.
