I recently had to leave my car overnight at pump #7 at my local Mobil. I refused to take it to the dealer after what they told me it would cost, after the toe. I was able to fix the problem and drive off for under $30.00. Car has been great since. I will share it with anyone that is interested, but not in forum. Too detailed, and don't want to confuse people.
Re: Do it yourself solution to column lock (Umrswimr)
Have you ever tried doing that? You will still have a locked wheel and will still get the message asking you to remove the key for 10 seconds. That was the first thing I tried without results.
Re: Do it yourself solution to column lock (carpe dm)
LOL, I don't think I can handle driving a Honda after owning a vette!! Basically, I made a temporary wiring harness to reset the column lock assembly. Pulling any of the fuses does not reset it. After getting under way, I talked a friend from Chevy and was told that they usually have to replace the lock assembly
Re: Do it yourself solution to column lock (Mark S.)
Basically, I made a harness that I keep in my car at all times now in case I ever have the problem again. I have made a few for others as well to keep with them. It plugs in under the dash panel only for a second and is then removed. E-mail me for more details. I don't want to mislead anyone and cause them electrical problems by not being detailed. I am going to type up a detailed explaination, and can make the harness if you want. It can all be done with basic understanding of auto electronics.

Basically sounds like step one of installing the column Lock Bypass. Apply a momentary 12v to the lock motor to cause it to retract. Essentially resetting the servo motor. ;)
With the bypass ...it with fools the system into thinking the motor did it's job..

Re: Do it yourself solution to column lock (pewter99)
That is all it is, your right. There is no need to take it to the dealer for that. They replace a bunch of parts for nothing. Like I said, anyone with knowledge in electronics can make a simple harness like I did to reset the motor, and you are on your way. The bypass kit is over $100.00, but there are many people that don't know enough about electronics to do the work. The point is to be able to reset it quick for under 20 bucks if you get stuck. I am not trying to make a big secret issue of it, just help a fellow vette owner save money for gas, not the dealer!!!!!
Re: Do it yourself solution to column lock (chuckster)
I had the column lock several times over the years on my '01. I always used the pull hard on the wheel while turning the key to the on position. Worked every time. Never had to leave the car or get it towed. Takes a littlke practice but it never failed. :D
