.....the warning come on the DIC? F-body cars state that when the warning comes on that they are down 2 full quarts (seems high to me). Since our dipsticks are so bad, what is the word for the C5? How much is it down? 1 quart? 2?
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (Buckmaster)
it could be as much as 2 quarts... and it has been (others) experience that after you put the 2 quarts back into the engine, the warning will not go off.
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (John Nowak PE)
Errrrrrr, so it is 1 quart when the DIC displays the message? Or more? I can never get a straight answer. I know this sounds easy to verify but honestly the dipstick is too unreliable IMO. I check my oil immediately after changing the oil and it shows the full mark to be about half way up the stick (the area where the oil is checked)....and even that is not clear.
Ours comes on at about 1 quart low. Always has. Unfortunately I got used to the message until the car was re-ringed.
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (Buckmaster)
Folks,
I usally log about 3,000 mile per year. The oil and filter get changed annually. I've never gotten the low oil indication in the DIC and the oil level on the stick always sits near full line. I noticed that some of you on this thread are adding oil between changes. What kind of oil usages are you seeing?

So I guess you know nothing about the oil consumption problem the C5 has?
For drag racers (not sure about road racers) it is necessary to replenish some oil, maybe 1/2 - 3/4 qt, after a hard day at the track. This for cars that do not normally have an oil consumption problem.
Who knows how much replenishment oil those with a consumption problem have during/after the same type of day.
I suggest folks check their oil manually more often and NOT wait for the DIC to warn you. It does not sound like a good idea to run around for any length of time while short 1 1/2 qts of oil!

I agree 100%. I am ALWAYS checking my oil level. Problem is the DAMN dipstick to be honest. IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!! Maybe something is wrong with mine and it is too short......but when it is full, the oil is only half way up on the scarred area on the stick. Putting too much in is bad too.............
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (Buckmaster)
Hope you don't have to re-ring the motor. I just did mine but I was lucky in that I had the motor out of the car already for other work. Its a couple grand to do the job.
Chevy should just step up to the plate and fix this issue. :mad
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (Buckmaster)
My experience is 2 quarts low when the DIC comes on. I have to add a quart every 400 to 800 miles. (depending on how hard I drive) I am going through the oil consumption test as we speak. My next visit will be my third trip to the dealer who still is not commited to what the exact guideline is. I am not even sure I want these knuckleheads doing the re-ring if it is covered under warranty. But what are you going to do? It pings pretty bad under heavy load and I attribute that to partialy all the blowby. Since it appears to affect the performance I won't live with carrying a case of oil around and adding every fuel stop! I sure wouldn't sell it to anyone like this and not sure I want to take the hit on a trade in. :mad

I must confess that I have heard very little on thesubject. Probably an indication of my limited exposure to the Forum. Oil usage between changes has not been an issue with me. Perhaps it's isolated to particular model years or vin's. Several of my friends have C5's ranging from 01's through 04's. Heavy oil consumption has not been their experience either.

You are correct. Early 2001's had oil issues. Then the General changed the rings...............As far as I know all other years are OK. For me, a BIG stroker motor WILL burn some oil.............
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (Buckmaster)

Actually, not as bad as you think. GM recommends that, when racing your LS-1 engine to overfill the crankcase by 1 qt. This is to keep oil in the pan during high rpm, long duration corners as the oil starts pooling in the valvetrain.
And the extra oil doesn't have to be drained at the end of the day. Therefore, I just put in 7 qts. when changing the oil (0.5 qt over). Never had an oil pressure problem during racing, and haven't seen any evidence of oil getting pushed through the PCV system, either.
Re: [LOW OIL]How much when................ (VetteDrmr)
Yes, I agree. I meant normal driving. In fact, The General talks about it on the video they provide..............I can tell you that at higher rpms, my stroker does suck some oil into the TB/Manifold......NEPTUNEBILL has some good info on this (we have the same motor). :)
