Default Stupid "Techy" Question

Hey guys,

Having just purchased my vette a few weeks ago, I am watching and attempting to learn and understand all of the information provided by the computer information center. Does anyone know how the system monitors and determines the remaining life in your oil? Is it simply an amount of time or miles that elapse in between oil changes based on the assumption that you actually reset it or does it monitor average oil pressure and temperatures and utilize some sort of computerized program to determine remaining life? :withstupid:
I have read the manual and basically it tells me "what" the display is telling me but doesnt explain how it it is determined.

Thanx

The way I understand it.....

You start out at 15,000 miles when you reset the monitor to 100%. The % remaining will go down with every mile you travel, every time you start the car, every time the engine goes through a heat/cool cycle, any time there is an 'overheating' condition, and who knows how many other 'bad' things that the computer can detect.

I just changed my oil this morning after 6 months and 7750 miles (on my daily driver coupe) with the oil life monitor showing 4% remaining.

Hope this helps, and welcome to the forum :seeya

I wish I had known about that when my oil was last changed. It has only been a month or two and it says 47% left. I guess it never got reset. Thanks for the info.

The % life remaining will drop as mentioned above. The computer will also take into consideration how HARD you are driving as well. If you spend more time at WOT and high rpms the % remaining will fall faster. My dealer changes mine for free every 3000 miles and the DIC typically says ~60% remaining. HTH

That's pretty close but on a 2000 model or earlier (2001 and up went to 15000) the mileage starts at 10,000 miles. If you were to stay at an ideal temperature with long hours of operation like freeway driving the algorithm wouldn't subtract much from the 10,000 miles. For instance I just took a 3000 mile roadtrip and oil life tracked right with miles. But the mileage will drop rapidly if the oil temperature is above or below that range. Running on a roadcourse at 250+ drops it like a rock. By the way the easiest way to reset the oil life after a change is to turn on the ignition, but don't start, the car and step on the gas pedal 3 times. (Honest!)
