Is it wise to place some type of heatwrap between the headers and the starter? Is there anything esle that should be done besides keeping the O2 semsor wiring away from the headers?
Hm... I need to get mine up in the air and chcek the clearances... I haven't had any problems yet. The other day the car took a hair longer to start, but I dunno...
I have found that even with coating, you still can cook starters, this happened on a street rod with 1/2 air gap between the tubes and starter. So rather than find out on the vette,,I got some heat reflective blanket material and seeing it was next to impossible to actually wrap the starter, I wire tyed it to the positive cable above the starter and draped it between the headers and oil pan, the tyed it to the transmission oil line. It works great, protects the wires, starter and does not pose a problem ,,I also used heat shied tube and covers the o2 sensor wires....better safe than sorry....I have LG headers. I even applied reflective material to the trans tunnel and transmission pan sides.
I think it has more to do with your climate than anything else... I have ran my car at the race track in 108 deg weather all day for 2 days.. that torture tested the heck out of my car. Ihad no problems with wires, or a starter before, during or after that time. I can see how the Arizona heat would make a diff.
I started getting the spongy clutch pedal problem, I think the headers were the cause, bleeded the fluid and wrapped part of them and bled the fluid as best i could, so far no more problems. Bottom line it deffinitly cant hurt.
I cooked 2 starters in 6 months with the arizona heat. I added heat wrap on the header to keep the heat away from the starter and o2 wiring.
I wouldn't do this any place except maybe Az. Long term wrapping of un-coated hearders can lead to corrosion issues on the headers, perhaps just ugly looks if they are SS. Perhaps it's dry enough in Az for this to not be an issue?
