Default How high for exhaust install?

Just got a B&B Tri-flo Rte 66 exhaust for my B-day...

I want to install them myself and need to know the minimum distance I need to get the back up in the air to get the stock pipes off and the new ones on over the axle. (I am aware I need to drop one side of the swaybar also)

I have a 3 ton jack and 4 jackstands (if needed) Will I be able to get the back high enough without finding a shop with a lift?

I know the jacking points (I change my own oil and have had all 4 tires and wheels off at once) I just don't want to get started and find out I don't have enough clearance to do the intall.

Blorton and I did it on both out cars to get Z06 Ti's in our cars. The bottom of the rear fascia was ~32" from the ground on my car and a little more on his.

On mine, I used a 4"x4" piec of wood on top of my jack cradle to lift the rear crossmember. I also had a 2"x10" under the front wheels of my jack. Blorton used a 4"x4" with just his jack on the rear crossmember. Both times we had the front wheels on ramps. The important thing is to realize your front wheels want to walk backward as you jack it up. You need keep them from rolling off the ramps if you use them on the front wheels. Once you've pulled the stock exhaust out, you can set the rear of the car back down on jackstands or ramps.

Be very careful when jacking the car up with the front wheels on ramps. I had a car come down off the ramps while jacking the rear of an f-body up years ago. I saw my hand that was on the handle move. Then without having time to realize that I was thinking I moved real fast to the left as the car came down. The jack handle went through the garage door that was behind where I just was 1-2 seconds earlier. This event was so close that my shirt blew back when I was making my move to get out of the way. It ended up getting pinned between the car and the garage door. Someone was watching over me that day! :)

Again, be very careful!

Oh man..you are in for a good time...

We had to get the car about 4 feet off the ground on all four wheels to get it done.

It was a pain in the butt...and then we had to do it again to put the stock back on.

Here ia a link to a tech article on doing it. You have to get the car up at least 34" clearance. That is a way up in the air. I did mine and it is a job. Lots easier to go to a muffler shop or someone that has a lift. If car is an auto trans you have to remove a small metal shield from passenger side gas tank bottom to get the right side pipe flange out. Probably need 2 new gaskets also from chev dealer. http://97vette.com/howto/mufflers/index.html

You can simply cut the factory system out and not worry about how high
you need to be. Do yourself a favor and remove the rear wheels for
a little breathing room.

But if you intend to keep the factory system whole, you really need to get
the car 34" up. At first it seems almost impossible that the passenger side
will come out, but be gentle and twist and turn and it's out. The driver's
side is easy.

I couldn't get my car high enough to take the stock one off in one piece when i was installing my bullets so i ended up cutting them off. I figure if i ever need the stock part again they can be had hereo n the forum most of the time for free or real cheap.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to get it up high enough. I want it out without cutting. I'm trying to find a concrete retaining wall about 4-6 feet off the ground I can back up to. Barring that I'll go to an exhaust shop.

Had to get my vette(auto) about 36" off the ground. Measured from bottom of rear fascia to floor. Only need that high for a minute to remove old exhaust in one piece, then lowered to safer level to install new exhaust. Passenger side is a PIA to remove in one piece--but will come with some swearing---- :D
