I am taking delivery of a Zo6 this week.My last car(2001 Vert) had an automatic and I am happy to be manually shifting soon.My question is, What happens if you overrev on a downshift ( accidently as in a misshift from5th into 2nd) and the motor exceeds 6,500 rpm.I am aware the rev limiter protects the engine if you are going over while accelerating.I had an s2000 and know 4 cylinder cars with 4 valves per cylinder will experience catastrophic failure with a missed downshift and over revving. The rev limiter cannot protect it in those situations. Is this the same thing somebody will exoerience with an LS1 or Ls6 engine if they slip up.Of coarse this can be avoided by good concetration while racing. Thanks in advance if anyone wants to give me some imput! ;) :lurk:
I thought so!I have a nuerological problem and sometimes my fingers go numb without me noticing. Not good when shiftig...Thats why my first Vette I bought in December was an auto.I missed shifting real fast and bought the new replacement, yesterday. It's nice to become a more active in the driving experience again.Thankyou ,as you can see I still have a lot to learn :chevy
Enjoy the car, manual is the only way to go, just so much more fun. Even after the money that missed shift at the track cost me, I'd never drive an auto.
Couple of ways to prevent that is to use more braking and less down shifting at High RPM... remember that brakes are cheap for your car... trannys and clutch setups are not. My tranny and diff are in broken in 5 pieces right now... (not from over reving the engine) try buying those parts and you will think twice about being hard on the drivetrain.
As you said, the rev limiter can't help because the engine is mechanically driven to very high rpm via the rear wheels to transmission via lower gear via clutch. Not good. Results could be, broken timing chain, valves, springs, etc.
Tune your car and have them move the rev limiter up about 200. Helps.
Huh ? How does that help when going from 4th to 3rd when your aiming for 5th. If your near redline when that happens your probably toast regardless of what you do with the rev limiter.
I agree with JerryL. A good shifter like the Hurst will provide a stronger centering force that will make it easier to hit the proper gear. The stock shifter is pretty bad.

Re: Over Rev past Redline? (pure energy)
Same deal bent push rods and valves  $$ I use to let diffent people drive my car UNTIL one day I was racing someone I should have beat. Then I realized something was wrong. Bent valve :cuss They probably didn't even relize they did it. I didn't until I saw it down on power in a match up. Becareful as GM will not warranty it in most cases. They will have the data on the computer also.
