I have had 3 different times now the "Chaging System Fault" light come on upon starting of my 02 roadster. I have had it to my local dealer and they said they wanted to try a new alternator but could not produce any information that it was bad. Amps were good and volts were good. It seems to start and run fine but this light has flashed on for just a couple of seconds each of these 3 times. They wanted $495 for the alternator and $88 to install it. I hate to put on something that isn't broke. Have you got any reccomendations?
Thanks,
Mark
Don't replace the alt yet, I think your 2002 had a better factory battery but my problem turned out to be battery acid from the old battery (OEM) had dripped down the inside of the plastic sheathing to the starter, ruined the starter, cables all kind of s$#@ and this a year or two after taking out the OEM battery--I bought the alt for nothing, 500 bucks for a damn alt is crazy and the starter is 350 to 400 bucks more-- good luck but it sounds more like a grounding prob then the alt to me like a ground coming loose and sometimes flashing the warning, if this is the case it will get worse the looser it gets until it shuts the car down---the fuse box near the battery has a cluster of wires coming out that are clamped down by a good size nut that is just under the cover--make sure this is tight when loose sometimes it does what you say, sometimes will not start and will go into reduced power whenever it shakes loose a little--my system is currently telling the PCM I am running on 25volts so it won't even start but I think we found the faulty wire---a 10 cent wire screwing up a car with 50K in mods alone :cuss
You need to install a CAGS Defeat device. It appears someone disconnected the plug so they could shift through the gears without the vette controlling the 1-4 shifts. Disconnecting without using this device will set off the code.
That alarm will be enabled when (senario #1) battery voltage drops below 11.0 volts. Or (senario #2) if the computer doesn't see anychange in output voltage from the alt within a certain time frame. Usually if senario #2 is true you'll get a p1637 or p1638 code. If you want to, take the alternator off and bring it to a local auto parts store to be checked out, usually for free. Then go over all battery and alternator connectors.
Tom, thanks for the list. That is the code I got twice now and I do have a CAGS device from Mid America (new one) installed. Any ideas, the device has been on over a month. Thanks, Skip :)
